Box Score FLUSHING, N.Y. – The Fairleigh Dickinson men's tennis team earned a win at first doubles but suffered a 7-0 defeat at the hands of St. John's at the USTA National Center on Wednesday night.
Freshman
Mehdi Dhouib and sophomore
Andris Gudins came away with a 6-4 win over St. John's Andrei Crapcenco and Luka Lucevic at no. 1 doubles for the lone win of the match for the Knights (2-4).
The Red Storm (6-3) had already won the other two doubles matches to take the first point and then captured wins in all six singles matches as well to garner the remaining points.
Gudins also played a tightly contested match at no. 2 singles. He first pulled out a 7-6 (8) win on the tiebreaker in the first set but dropped the next one 2-6 to set up a decisive third set. With the match already decided, the two players partook in a superset, and despite a strong challenge, Gudins fell to his opponent 9-11 to drop the match.
Junior
Ivan Solans Diaz battled his opponent at no. 5 singles to a three-set match as well. Solans Diaz won the first set, 6-3, but his adversary countered with a strong second and third set to win 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.
The Red Storm won each of the remaining four singles matches in straight sets, with sophomore
Moric Budinszky taking four games in his second set representing the best set score by the remaining four Knights.
FDU next faces Army West Point on Sunday at 2 p.m. on the West Point campus in New York.
