Men's Basketball Nabs 11 Steals but Falls at Saint Peter's

JERSEY CITY, N.J. – The Fairleigh Dickinson men's basketball team fell 86-70 to Saint Peter's at the Yanitelli Center on Wednesday night.

Junior guard Jahlil Jenkins paced the Knights with 19 points on 6-of-9 shooting and dished out four assists, while senior forward Kaleb Bishop scored 16 with five rebounds and two blocks. Jenkins also matched his career-high with five steals in the loss.

The Knights (2-7) forced 17 turnovers and grabbed a season-high 11 steals but were unable to overcome a 45-22 rebounding disparity. Derrick Woods led the home team's performance on the boards with a 17-point, 10-rebound double-double. The Peacocks (2-4), who entered the game ranked sixth in the country in offensive rebounding, corralled 15 in the win.

After a 1-for-10 start from the field, the home team recovered to shoot 52 percent overall and 9-of-17 (52.9 percent) from three-point range. The Knights were held to 37.9 percent overall and 8-of-23 (34.8 percent) from deep.

"Saint Peter's outplayed us in just about every phase of the game tonight," said Greg Herenda following the loss. "Watching them in preparation, they are very athletic, they play hard and they rebound the ball incredibly well. I told Sha (Holloway) before the game that I really liked his team and he did not believe me. They are going to win games in the MAAC."

"We just ended the first half poorly and could never get anything sustained in the second half. We have to figure out the road, we need to play tougher on both ends of the floor, we need to do so many things better. Historically, we have been a very good road team but this group needs to figure out what it takes in a hurry."

In the opening half, a 3-pointer by Jenkins with 5:19 to play made it a one-point game, 23-22, but the Peacocks would finish on a high note. Leading by a bucket, the hosts would score six straight points in the final 35 seconds and carry a 42-34 lead into the break.

Jenkins had the touch early for the Burgundy and Blue pouring in 15 first-half points on 5-of-7 shooting. The junior guard's fellow Knights connected on just 6-of-22 as the team shot 37.9 percent overall in the half and 3-of-10 from behind the arc.

The Peacocks, who utilized 11 players in the opening stanza, shot 46.2 percent and carried a 26-11 advantage on the glass. Fousseyni Drame scored eight with six rebounds to pace the Peacocks whose eight-point lead was their largest of the half. Drame would finish with 14 points and nine boards in the win.

A 7-0 run out of the break propelled the home team to a 17-point cushion. Aided by a pair of 3-pointers by Bishop, the Knights would slice the deficit to 11, 62-51 at the under-eight media timeout.

After the timeout, the Peacocks would rebuild their lead with three trifectas, including a pair from Matthew Lee, which resulted in a 73-55 lead with 6:12 to play in regulation.

The Knights were unable to get closer than 11 points before the final horn sounded.

"Now we go home and play Princeton on Saturday," Herenda concluded. "We need to learn from tonight and get ready for another tough opponent."

Next up for the Burgundy and Blue is a home test against Princeton this Saturday, December 14 at 1:00 p.m. Fans, come out to the game and enjoy an afternoon of activities as the Knights celebrate the birthday of the University's mascot, Knightro.
