BROOKLYN HEIGHTS, N.Y. – Sophomore
Sophia Spiridonakos recorded a career-high 10 kills but the Fairleigh Dickinson volleyball team fell in straight sets 25-17, 25-18, 25-14 at St. Francis Brooklyn on Friday night.
Spiridonakos reached the double-digit kill mark for the first time in her career, while committing just two errors. The Sewickley, Pennsylvania native's .348 attack percentage led all Knights and she added seven digs and three blocks in the loss.
Junior outside
Magdalena Maksimovic finished with six kills, while sophomore
Jessica Throckmorton totaled five kills and 10 digs.
The Terriers (6-10, 1-2 NEC) were paced by Vanja Miljacic's nine kills and a team total of 11 service aces in the contest. Kizzy Rodriguez was responsible for five of those aces and also tallied 17 digs in the contest.
The Knights (1-16, 0-3 NEC) dug themselves an early hole as the home team raced out to an 11-2 lead in the first set. Rodriguez delivered a pair of aces for her team over that span. A Spiridonakos kill helped the Knights get within five but they failed to gain additional ground as the Terriers took a 1-0 match lead.
In the second set, the Knights turned the tables by scoring the first five points. Maksimovic came out firing and put down three of her six total kills during that stretch. Despite the Knights' momentum, the Terriers stormed back with 11 of the next 12 points. The home team remained on top by at least five points over the remainder of the set.
The third frame saw the Knights capture a 7-4 lead aided by kills from Throckmorton and freshman
Mujay Mambu. After Spiridonakos gave her team a 9-7 edge, the Terriers used a 7-1 run to take control. With the lead in hand, the home team closed out the match and earned their first NEC win of the season.
The Knights are back in action tomorrow when they return home to host LIU. First serve is set for 5:00 p.m. at the Rothman Center. The contest coincides with Family Day at FDU and the Hackensack Main Street Business Alliance's Music Art Brew & Fare festival. For more information visit
