TEANECK, N.J. – Fairleigh Dickinson University junior
Viktorija Miseljic netted the contests lone goal in the 106th minute with a header that earned the Knights a 1-0 double overtime win over conference foe Central Connecticut State University on Thursday night at University Stadium under the lights.
"Our intensity picked up and we played better the longer the game went on," said head coach
Eric Teepe. "Amanda made some big saves in this game and our midfielders played outstanding tonight. I felt the adrenaline kicked in for our team and we made a great play on the ball to score in double overtime. This was a great team win against a great opponent in CCSU."
Late in the second overtime, FDU junior
Alexiane Marquis started a run down the right side of the field, was able to get past the Blue Devil defense and sent a cross into the box that bounced around and found the head of Miseljic who buried a header into the net for the win. The goal was Miseljic's first of the season and Marquis recorded her team-leading third assist of the season.
FDU (4-5-3, 3-0-0 NEC) came into the game looking for revenge after last year's loss in the NEC semifinals, and both teams looked to feel out the other early in the match. Sophomore
Lea Egner started with the Knights first shot that went just left of the mark in the 16th minute. CCSU (3-4-4, 1-1-1 NEC) created its first scoring chance in the 17th minute when senior Yo Tachibana booted one from the left side of the field that FDU senior goalie
Amanda Fitzgerald made a nice jumping save on.
Fitzgerald recorded her second save of the half in the 23rd minute when Blue Devil senior Allyson O'Rourke attempted a header off a pass from junior Erica Bardes. The Burgundy and Blue created its best scoring chance of the first half off a corner kick in the 28th minute. The ball found the head of Miseljic, but CCSU recorded a team save on the shot attempt. FDU sophomore
Madelyn Robbins and Egner recorded the final two shot attempts on goal of the first half that were both stopped by CCSU sophomore goalie Amanda McQuillan as the game was tied 0-0 after 45 minutes of action.
The Blue Devils opened the second half with its best look of the contest when CCSU junior Tess Atkinson received the ball and had an open net before FDU senior
Stasi Torchia came in with her foot and made a tremendous save on the ball in the 50th minute. "Stasi is one of the pillars of our team and is one of the best midfielders in our conference," said Teepe. Fitzgerald then made a great save on a boot from O'Rourke in the middle of the box in the 57th minute.
CCSU continued to apply pressure to the Knights defense but Fitzgerald continued to come up big for FDU as she recorded another save on a shot from junior Brianna Williams in the 64th minute. Blue Devil junior Jenna Rae Covello then created a chance in the 73rd minute that again was stopped by a sliding Fitzgerald.
The Knights offense then picked it up as junior
Sofia Albertsson had a shot blocked to earn a corner kick. Off the corner, Robbins generated an opportunity that went just high of the net in the 78th minute. Fitzgerald tallied another big save towards the end of regulation off a shot from the Blue Devils' season-leading goal scorer Roma McLaughlin. McLaughlin sent another out just high before the end of regulation as the game was still tied at 0-0 heading into overtime.
The first overtime consisted of both teams battling for possession and each team continually applying pressure to one another. Miseljic attempted the only shot of the frame in the 99th minute of play that went out of play. CCSU came out aggressive to start the second overtime by earning a pair of corner kicks within the first five minutes of action. The Knights defense was able to clear those corner kicks away and gave their offense a chance to score.
Miseljic led the Knights offense with two shots on goal and the team recorded 14 total shots in the game. Fitzgerald collected six saves and her 14th career shutout. She is now tied with Sage DoVale for the program-record for career shutouts. The Burgundy and Blue played 17 players in the contest.
The Knights will return to action on Sunday afternoon when they travel to Sacred Heart for a conference match starting at 1 p.m.
