FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Senior
Amanda Fitzgerald broke the Knights' all-time shutout record by recording her fourth shutout of the year and 15th of her career in Fairleigh Dickinson's 3-0 conference victory over Sacred Heart on Sunday afternoon.
The senior netminder recorded a game-high five saves as the Knights won their third game in a row. Sophomore
Christa Waterman, sophomore
Madelyn Robbins, and freshman
Maja Skansberg each recorded a goal for the Burgundy and Blue in the game.
"We came out strong and set the tone as the aggressors early in the game," said head coach
Eric Teepe. "This was a solid all-around game for our team and our offense was able to capitalize three times. Any weekend that you can defeat CCSU at home and Sacred Heart on the road, you feel great about that."
FDU (5-5-3, 4-0-0 NEC) opened the game by finding the team's leading scorer, sophomore
Lea Egner who rifled a shot that went just left of the mark in the second minute of action. The Knights then earned the first corner kick of the game in the ninth minute but the Pioneers (5-5-2, 2-1-1 NEC) were able to clear the ball away. Egner again beat Sacred Heart's defense in the 10th minute that missed and junior
Viktorija Miseljic followed that shot up with a chance she fired just high of the net.
The Burgundy and Blue continued to keep the Pioneers on their heels in the 11th minute when senior
Jackson Bennett created a chance that was saved by Sacred Heart freshman Elyssa Kipperman. The Knights earned a corner kick that Skansberg took after the save and capitalized with a goal from Waterman. The goal was her second of the season and gave the Knights and early 1-0 lead, with the assist going to Skansberg.
Sacred Heart attempted its first shot of the game in the 13th minute off the foot of freshman Meadow Mancini that went wide right. Kipperman then made a great save off a boot from Miseljic in the 15th minute. Skansberg and senior
Stasi Torchia continued to push the ball down the field and attempted shots that just missed the mark within a minute of one another.
FDU senior defender
Samantha Roff beat the Pioneer defense in the 27th minute and it took a great jumping save from Kipperman to keep the deficit at just one goal. Fitzgerald recorded her first save of the game on a shot from freshman Michelle Clarkin in the 32nd minute. The netminder then made another save in the 34th minute off a boot from freshman Desiree Crawford.
The Knights countered after the Crawford shot and junior
Sofia Albertsson recorded a shot on goal that was stopped by Kipperman in the 36th minute. Clarkin rifled a shot that was deflected and earned the Pioneers a corner kick opportunity that FDU was able to clear away. Torchia fired the final Knights shot of the half that went over the net.
The two teams each came out of the half by trading shot attempts from Torchia and Sacred Heart sophomore Sara da Silva, but neither went in the net. Fitzgerald then came up with another timely save as she stopped the boot from freshman Azria Malloy. Robbins responded with her goal in the 61st minute to give the Knights a 2-0 lead. The goal was Robbins' second of the season. "Robbins goal was huge for us to get up by two goals and she has been great in one on one situations all season long," said Teepe.
Malloy and the Pioneers looked to cut the deficit in half when she booted a shot to the bottom left of the goal that was stopped by a diving Fitzgerald. After a pair of Knight shots from Bennett and Torchia missed the mark, Sacred Heart freshman Anna Ludkiewicz had a chance in the middle of the field that Fitzgerald again made a big save on in the 74th minute. "Fitzgerald has been consistent for us all season long and commands where our defenders should be on the field. She always makes the big saves we need and she continues to be an important player to our teams success," said Teepe.
Skansberg went on to score the final goal of the game in the 88th minute of action off a pass from junior
Alyssa Caggiano. The goal was Skansberg's third of the season and she is now tied with Egner with her three goals. Caggiano was credited with her first assist of the season. The Knights went on to win the contest 3-0.
The Knights return to action on Friday afternoon at 3 p.m. when they travel to Loretto, Pa. for a conference match against Saint Francis U.
