Udovc Nets Game-Winner in 1-0 Win Against St. Francis Brooklyn

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – Fairleigh Dickinson sophomore Isabelle Udovc netted the game-winning goal in the 73rd minute to propel the Knights to a 1-0 victory over St. Francis Brooklyn. The Burgundy and Blue have now recorded shutouts in six contests this season, which is a program-record.

The Knights now have own a record of (7-5-5, 6-0-2 NEC), which is good for first place in the conference with 20 points. Central Connecticut State (19 points) and Bryant (18 points) are in second and third respectively in the standings.

"I felt we controlled play throughout the game, but didn't execute enough of our chances to put them away," said head coach Eric Teepe. "We need to play a more complete game and be more aggressive with the ball. We need to work harder and play better in our final two games of the season."

In the 73rd minute, Udovc fought her way to the ball and netted the goal that put the Knights up 1-0. The ball was rolling around in the box and Udovc got her foot on it to beat Terrier junior Maggie Boston. "Udovc did a great job of getting the ball on that play and sometimes goals like that can be the difference in a game," said Teepe. The goal was Udovc's first of the season.

St. Francis Brooklyn (0-15, 0-8 NEC) freshman Jacqueline Puda fired the first shot of the game in the third minute that went just right of the mark after the Knights defense forced her into a tough shot. FDU freshman Maja Skansberg was able to beat the Terrier defense in the fifth minute of action, but sent the shot left of the goal. Each team continued to trade possession over the next five minutes before St. Francis freshman Isabelle Gollette rifled a shot that went wide of the net.

FDU senior Jackson Bennett streaked down the right side of the field, but had her shot blocked to earn a Knight corner kick. The Terriers were able to clear the corner kick away, but the Knights then earned the ball back. Burgundy and Blue junior Alexiane Marquis rifled a shot off a ball she tracked down in the 20th minute that hit the post to keep the game scoreless. Marquis then received a pass in the middle of the field and fired a left-footed shot that again went off the post. Terrier freshman midfielder Margaret Motolese attempted the next shot in the middle of the box that she sent high of the mark.

In the 36th minute, Burgundy and Blue sophomore Noam Kedem received a pass from Marquis and sent the shot towards the bottom center of the goal, but Boston recorded a save on the shot. Kedem and St. Francis Broolyn freshman Trystan Thompson-Cotterell traded shot attempts to end the half.

The Knights opened the second half looking to score early as sophomore Lea Egner rifled a shot that went just left of the mark in the 46th minute. The Terriers responded by earning a corner kick in the 47th minute and freshman Henriette Lykke sent a shot over the net. Kedem and Egner applied offensive pressure as they each rifled shot attempts within a minute of one another that were both saved by Boston. The Knights were able to create a corner kick opportunity after the Egner shot that St. Francis Brooklyn was able to clear out of danger. FDU earned another corner in the 54th minute that Skansberg shot out of play to the right.

The Terriers then created their second corner kick chance of the half in the 61st minute that was cleared away. In the 63rd minute, Lykke was able to create the Terriers best chance of the half when she attempted a shot that was saved by a sliding FDU senior goalie Amanda Fitzgerald. Skansberg then shot the ball in the 72nd minute that hit the post and players fought for possession, leading to Udovc scoring the goal to give the Knights the 1-0 lead.

FDU junior Alyssa Caggiano and Egner each fired shot attempts in the 74th minute that went wide of the mark. Egner's shot was deflected which earned the Knights another corner kick opportunity that would be stopped. Thompson-Cotterell then fired a shot on goal of the game from the left side of the field in which Fitzgerald moved to her left and saved. Caggiano looked to double the lead in the 82nd minute, but Boston recorded a save on the play. Thompson-Cotterell attempted the Terriers final shot of the game that was saved by Fitzgerald to help earn the Knights a 1-0 victory.

Fitzgerald ended the game with three saves and recorded her 17th career shutout. Udovc was the 13th Knight to score a goal so far this season. There were 16 FDU players that appeared in the contest.

The Knights will return home on Thursday night at 7 p.m. when they host Wagner in an NEC contest at University Stadium.
