Marquis Nets FDU Goal in 1-1 Draw Against Bryant

TEANECK, N.J. – Fairleigh Dickinson University junior Alexiane Marquis netted the Knights lone goal in the fourth minute in a 1-1 draw against Bryant on Sunday afternoon at University Stadium.

"I feel both teams battled and ultimately it was a fair result in this battle for first place," said head coach Eric Teepe. "We found a way to compete and I really liked our aggressive mentality throughout the game. We did a better job of contesting second and third balls which led to our goal."

Bryant (7-3-4, 5-0-3 NEC) opened the contest with a shot off the foot of senior Alison Guilmette that went just wide of the goal. FDU (6-5-5, 5-0-2 NEC) created its first chance of the game when sophomore Lea Egner rifled a shot that got blocked, but the loose ball found the foot of Marquis who would shoot it into the back of the net in the fourth minute. The goal was Marquis' team-leading fourth of the season and Egner recorded her third assist of the year.

The Knights then earned a penalty kick attempt in the 11th minute that junior Viktorija Miseljic sent just over the net to keep the lead at 1-0. Bryant's best chance of the first half came in the 25th minute when junior Amanda Spitaleri fired a shot that senior goalie Amanda Fitzgerald made a save on. The Bulldogs earned a corner after the Fitzgerald save, but the netminder punched the ball away from danger, and Fitzgerald again recorded a save on a shot in the 33rd minute. FDU sophomore Madelyn Robbins attempted the final shot of the first half in the 41st minute that went just high of the net.

Marquis received a nice pass in the middle of the field in the 47th minute and put too much strength on the kick to open the second half for the Knights. The next 10 minutes consisted of both offenses trying to move the ball down the field, but each defense played stingy. The Bulldogs serviced in a pair of corners in the 60th minute that the Knights were able to clear out of danger. Bryant senior Marissa Grasso then created a good look in the 67th minute that Fitzgerald was able to save.

Fitzgerald made another crucial stop in the 77th minute off the foot of sophomore Chae Diani. FDU senior Samantha Roff was then able to get behind the Bulldog defense in the 79th minute and booted a shot that junior Meghan Dalton saved. Burgundy and Blue sophomore Christa Waterman created the Knights best chance of the second half that Dalton came out to make a nice save on in the 85th minute.

The Bulldogs were able to even the score off a corner kick serviced in by Guilmette who found Manna for the goal. The goal was Manna's fifth of the season and was the final shot attempt of regulation.

FDU freshman Maja Skansberg created the lone scoring chance in the first overtime when she was able to rifle off a shot in the 95th minute that was stopped by Dalton. To start the second overtime, the Bulldogs earned two corner kick attempts in the 102nd and 105th minutes that Fitzgerald was able to punch away from danger.

Spitaleri created the best look of the second overtime in the 106th minute, but again Fitzgerald came up with a save. Manna attempted the final shot of the game in the 110th minute that missed the mark and forced a draw. "I felt Amanda played a strong game and made big time saves for us down the stretch," said Teepe.

Fitzgerald recorded a total of seven saves to lead the Knights. The Burgundy and Blue had 17 players appear in the contest and the Knights fired nine shots. The tie was FDU's fifth of the season, which is the most ties in a season in program history.

The Knights will be back in action on Friday at 1 p.m., when they travel to St. Francis Brooklyn in an NEC contest. The road game against the Terriers will be FDU's final regular season road contest.
