ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Fairleigh Dickinson men's tennis team wrapped up competition at Navy's Joe Hunt Invitational Sunday, with the doubles teams carrying the day for the Knights.

The four doubles pairings for the Knights won all their matches on the final day of the three-day competition, and the duo of sophomore Moric Budinszky and junior Ivan Solans Diaz finished as the Orange Flight B champions for the tournament. Budinszky and Solans Diaz wrapped up a 4-1 weekend with a 6-4 win over a UConn team.

The three other teams for the Knights earned wins over Atlantic-10 conference duos. Sophomores Andris Gudins and Niclas Pietsch defeated a Richmond duo, 6-4, and sophomores Maciej Autuch and Eduardo Cabral teamed to beat a George Mason duo, 6-2. The freshman team of Mehdi Dhouib and Ryu Kozuki scored their doubles victory over a George Washington team, 6-2.

Pietsch earned the best singles finish for the Knights. The sophomore defeated a George Washington challenger, 6-0, 6-3, to earn a fifth-place finish in his singles flight.

Autuch and Gudins also earned singles wins on the final day of competition, with both players finishing 11th in their respective flights. Gudins topped a Navy opponent, 6-3, 6-4, while Autuch handled a UConn challenger in a 6-2, 6-2 straight set win.

Dhouib played for seventh place in his singles flight and played tough in a 6-2, 7-6 (3) loss to an Air Force adversary.

Solans Diaz and sophomore Youssef Sader each fell in their consolation finals singles matches in straight sets by a score of 6-1, 6-4, with Solans Diaz dropping his match to a George Mason foe and Sader losing to a UConn opponent.

Overall, the Knights finished the tournament with 15 singles wins and seven doubles victories.

The Knights compete again next weekend at Fordham, playing in the Fordham Four-in-the-Fall event scheduled for Saturday, October 6, and Sunday, October 7.

DAY TWO RECAP

The Fairleigh Dickinson men's tennis team continued play at Navy's Joe Hunt Invitational Saturday, winning 11 matches throughout the day.

The Knights captured victories in 10 of their 19 singles matches played, but only won one doubles match over the course of the day.

Sophomore Youssef Sader won two of the singles matches for the Knights. Working through the consolation bracket in the Green Flight, Sader defeated a Monmouth opponent in straight sets and then earned a hard-fought win over a UConn foe by a score of 6-4, 1-6, 10-8.

Junior Ivan Solans Diaz also won both of his singles matches in the consolation side of the Purple Flight. He first downed a UConn foe, 7-5, 6-4, and then later a St. Bonaventure challenger, 7-5, 6-1, to advance to tomorrow's consolation final.

Sophomores Maciej Autuch and Andris Gudins each won their first singles bouts of the day. Autuch defeated a George Mason opponent in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3, before falling to a George Washington foe in a second-set tiebreaker. Gudins also won his first match in straight sets over a George Mason player, 6-3, 6-0, and won the first set of his next match against a Morgan State competitor before eventually losing in an epic tiebreaker. His opponent won the match 6-7, 6-3, 12-10.

Sophomore Niclas Pietsch bounced back after a defeat in his first singles match of the day, capturing a win over a St. Bonaventure adversary by a score of 6-2, 1-6, 10-3. 

Sophomores Eduardo Cabral and Moric Budinszky also earned consolation victories in singles. Cabral won his match against a George Mason adversary in straight sets, 6-2, 7-6 (3). Budinszky took the first set of his match against a Navy challenger, 6-4, before dropping the second set. The sophomore went on to win the tiebreaker, 10-8, to take the match.

Budinszky teamed with Solans Diaz to earn FDU's only doubles win of the day as well. The duo earned a convincing win over a George Mason team, 6-2, for their third doubles win of the tournament.

The freshman doubles pairing of Mehdi Dhouib and Ryu Kozuki forced a tiebreaker in the second doubles match of the day but could not finish the match, suffering a narrow 7-6 (0) defeat.

DAY ONE RECAP

The Fairleigh Dickinson men's tennis team competed in the first day of competition in Navy's Joe Hunt Invitational Friday, earning victories in both singles and doubles play.

The Knights came away with two victories in both singles and doubles, with the doubles pairing of sophomore Moric Budinszky and junior Ivan Solans Diaz earning both FDU wins in the Orange Flight. Budiszky and Solans Diaz first defeated a Delaware team, 6-4, before handling a Navy duo in their next match by a score of 6-3.

Sophomore Niclas Pietsch and freshman Mehdi Dhouib earned the singles wins for the Knights. Pietsch pulled out a 7-5 win in his first set against his Temple adversary and then took the second set as well, 6-2, to earn the match victory. Dhouib defeated a Monmouth foe in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3.

Dhouib also team with fellow freshman Ryu Kozuki in doubles, and the freshman duo were a tough challenge in both their matches against Navy foes. Their first match required a tiebreaker, which was closely played until Navy came away with the 7-6 (8) victory. The second match was also a close affair, but the Knight pairing again fell short in a 7-5 loss.

The Knight duo of Pietsch and sophomore Andris Gudins also required a tiebreaker in their doubles match against a Navy pairing, falling 7-6 (4).

Sophomore Youssef Sader battled back after dropping the first set against his Richmond opponent in singles, but could not complete a comeback in a 6-1, 7-5 loss.
