HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. -- Sophomore
Eduardo Cabral won the consolation ladder of his singles draw to highlight the Fairleigh Dickinson men's tennis team's performance at the Hofstra Invitational Saturday.
After dropping his first match in the C singles draw the previous day, Cabral rebounded with three straight victories in the consolation bracket. He first topped an Adelphi opponent, 8-3, before downing a Siena foe in the consolation semifinal by an 8-4 margin. Cabral then carried his momentum into the final against a SUNY Oneonta competitor, winning the final by a score of 8-2. For Cabral, the wins represented his first three singles triumphs as a Knight.
Sophomore
Niclas Pietsch also scored a victory in the consolation ladder of the A singles draw, defeating an Adelphi adversary, 8-3. The win advanced Pietsch to the consolation final against a host Hofstra foe, but the sophomore could not compete in the final due to injury. Sophomore
Moric Budinszky suffered a close 8-6 defeat to the same Hofstra opponent in the consolation semifinal.
In doubles, Budinszky and junior
Ivan Solans Diaz competed in the B draw semifinal against a Siena team, but fell short of making the final in a 6-2 defeat.
Overall in the tournament, the Knights finished the two-day event with 10 singles victories and four doubles wins.
The Knights next compete in the Navy Invitational this upcoming weekend, with the three-day tournament set to begin Friday, September 28, and conclude on Sunday, September 30.

DAY ONE RECAP
The Fairleigh Dickinson men's tennis team played the first day of competiton at the Hofstra Invitational Friday, capturing victories in both singles and doubles.
The Knights had all four of their doubles pairings make the quarterfinals of their respective draws. Sophomore
Moric Budinszky and junior
Ivan Solans Diaz won back-to-back matches by 6-1 margin, first defeating a Adelphi duo before moving past a Wagner pairing in the quarterfinal. They advance to tomorrow's semifinal match.
In the A draw, sophomores
Andris Gudins and
Niclas Pietsch reached the quarterfinal with a bye in the first round, but the duo fell to a Sacred Heart pair by a score of 6-3. They will continue to compete in the consolation bracket tomorrow.
Also in the A Doubles draw, sophomores
Maciej Autuch and
Eduardo Cabral earned their first victory of the season, topping a SUNY Oneonta duo 7-6 (3) before falling in the quarterfinal to a Wagner pair. The freshman doubles team of
Mehdi Dhouib and
Ryu Kozuki also earned their first doubles win, sweeping an Oneonta duo 6-0 in the round of 16 before dropping their quarterfinal match to a Wagner team.
In singles, four Knights won their first matches in the main draw before falling in the next round. Dhouib earned his first career singles victory, defeating a Sacred Heart opponent, 9-7, in the A draw. He then fell to a Wagner foe, 8-3, in the quarterfinal.
Autuch played to a 8-2 win against an Adelphi adversary in his first singles match in the B draw, but he then dropped his next match to a Wagner competitior, 8-6. Solans Diaz also won his first singles match in the B draw, topping a Siena foe, 8-6, before falling in a close quarterfinal with a Sacred Heart foe, 9-8 (8).
Sophomore
Youssef Sader defeated a Siena opponent, 8-6, in the first round of the C singles draw, but he fell in his next match to a Queens adversary, 8-4.
Budinszky played tough against his Siena foe in his first singles match in the A draw, forcing a tiebreaker. The tiebreaker, however, went to his opponent, who won 9-8 (6). Gudins, Pietsch, Kozuki and Cabral all dropped their first singles matches of the day as well.
Pietsch and Budinszky each won their first consolation singles matches to remain in competition. Pietsch defeated a Sacred Heart opponent, 8-3, and Budinszky topped a Queens adversary, 8-2.
Kozuki, however, was defeated in his consolation match against a Siena foe, falling 8-1. Cabral will play his first consolation match tomorrow.
