BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Fairleigh Dickinson women's soccer team played to a stalemate with Lehigh through 75 minutes before a late goal led to a second straight 1-0 defeat.
The Knights (1-2) held the Mountain Hawks (1-1) to only three shot attempts in the first half but themselves only took three shots as well. The tempo picked up in the second half, with FDU creating chances in the box before Lehigh was able to push through a goal in the 77th minute.
"I think from our point of view, we didn't come out ready to compete," head coach
Eric Teepe said after the game. "I think we were sloppy with the ball and that caused turnovers, so that's something to learn moving forward. We can't let them out work us. We were way too passive. We have to find a better way to compete and challenge players. At the end of the day, they deserved it because they worked and worked, and that was the difference in the game."
Freshman
Madelyn Robbins took the first shot of the match, striking with her right foot toward the center of the net. The Mountain Hawks goalie Miranda Royds, however, made the save in the seventh minute. Two minutes later, Robbins played a part in creating another FDU shot, finding sophomore
Viktorija Miseljic at the top of the box for a header that was also saved.
The Mountain Hawks were held without a shot attempt through the first 10 minutes before challenging Knights junior goalkeeper
Amanda Fitzgerald, who saved the first shot she faced.
Each team presented with one more good opportunity to score in the first half, with Miseljic again working past the Lehigh defense to take a short shot on goal in the 20th minute. Fitzgerald stopped Lehigh's long attempt at goal five minutes later, keeping the score at 0-0 entering halftime.
Play began to pick up in the second half, with freshman
Lea Egner firing a quick shot wide of the net seconds into the half. Lehigh then countered with the next two shots, including one saved by Fitzgerald.
Robbins and sophomore
Andrea Garcia each contributed to the Knights' push to score with the next two shots on target. The Mountain Hawks then created an opportunity inside the box that forced Fitzgerald to dive to her right to make the save.
Fitzgerald again dove for her fifth stop of the match in the 70th minute, and the Knights responded with another offensive push. Sophomore
Sofia Albertsson had her only shot of the match blocked, leading to consecutive corner kick opportunities. The second attempt from junior
Stasi Torchia connected with Miseljic for a header, but Mountain Hawks goalkeeper Sam Miller made the save.
Lehighworked quickly on their ensuing counter and broke through with a score from Chloe Tremblay in the 77th minute.
The Knights themselves moved fast to earn another corner kick on the following possession, but no shot resulted from the ball passed into the box. A Miseljic shot from the left side of the net was stopped as well with just over two minutes to go, and a final try into the box off a set piece was cleared away to end the match.
Fitzgerald played all ninety minutes in net, making five saves to increase her career total to 230.
The Knights next play again on the road Monday night, traveling to Rider for a 7 p.m. match.
