LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. – The Fairleigh Dickinson women's soccer team scored early but surrendered a late goal in the first overtime period of its match at Rider, falling by a score of 2-1.
The Knights (1-3) jumped ahead when sophomore
Sofia Albertsson netted her first points of the season to make it 1-0 in the eighth minute. The Broncs (2-0-1), however, tied the match with less than a minute remaining before coming away with the game-winner towards the end of the first overtime period.
"I thought we came out strong to start," said head coach
Eric Teepe. "We created some good chances early and got the goal to go ahead. We missed some chances early too though, and against a team like them, we have to do better job of completing games. In overtime, we had some great chances, but we're not there right now, and we gave up a bad bounce and out of nothing they win. We need to learn from it, need to do a better job playing our game and playing through things moving forward."
The Knights went on the offensive early in the match, earning three shot opportunities and a corner kick in the first eight minutes of action.
Sophomore
Viktorija Miseljic helped set up the third shot opportunity, finding freshman
Lea Egner who then crossed right to left and connected with Albertsson five yards in front of the net. The reigning Northeast Conference rookie of the year headed the ball past the keeper for the goal and the 1-0 lead.
Junior goalkeeper
Amanda Fitzgerald saved a Rider shot and the defense deflected a headed ball towards the net in helping keep the score at 1-0 through halftime.
Fitzgerald started the second half with two more saves in the first five minutes. Miseljic and Albertsson each had good looks of their own to increase FDU's lead, but the Rider keeper kept the Knights at bay through 85 minutes.
With the half winding down, Rider pressed for the tying goal and converted a shot off a through ball with less than a minute remaining to push the contest to overtime.
The Broncs had the first three chances to score in the extra period, but Fitzgerald saved two of the three shots with the other hitting the crossbar. Albertsson's chance at goal in the 94th minute was blocked, and a shot from Miseljic sailed wide left of the net with under five minutes left in the period.
Rider's Sam Picinich later took a long shot attempt in the 99th minute that bounced over the head of Fitzgerald and into the net for the winning goal.
Fitzgerald finished the match with a season-best six saves.
Freshman
Noam Kedem and junior
Jackson Bennett each played their first minutes of action on the season as well.
The Knights next travel to Wilmington, N.C., where they will take on Cleveland State on August 31 at 5 p.m., as part of the Courtyard by Marriott UNCW Soccer Invitational.
