TEANECK, N.J. -- The Fairleigh Dickinson baseball team received 7.2 innings of solid relief from freshmen
Peter Theodorellis and
Austin Crebs but was unable to overcome an early five-run deficit in a 7-3 series-finale loss to Sacred Heart on Sunday afternoon.
Pitching in relief of starter
Aaron Cohn, Theodorellis provided the Knights (10-32, 1-21 NEC) with 5.1 innings of two-run ball, while striking out a team season-high nine batters in the loss.
Aided by designated hitter P.J. DeFilippo's two-run blast, the Pioneers (14-30, 9-12 NEC) struck for five runs in the first inning, which proved to be more than enough start for right-hander Ryan LaMay, who pitched seven frames, allowing one run and four hits, while striking out eight Knights.
Theodorellis came on for Cohn with the bases loaded and one out in the second inning and retired the next two men with a strikeout and a fly out. After a leadoff walk in the third, the freshman right-hander proceed to set down the next seven Pioneers before allowing a solo blast to Anthony Capozziello in the fifth. Theodorellis responded to the homer by striking out the next two batters. The Commack, New York native threw a career-high 91 pitches before Crebs came on with two outs in the sixth.
For Sacred Heart, LaMay allowed just two hits over the first six innings -- a pair of
Steven Yelin singles -- and the Pioneers led 6-0 after six.
Senior right fielder
Jason Fatzinger put the Knights on the board with a solo blast in the home seventh -- a towering shot to center field for his fifth of the season.
In the eighth,
Joe O'Rourke delivered a pinch-hit single on the first pitch he saw and two batters later,
Brandon Seltzer deposited a 1-0 pitch over the center field fence to pull the Knights to within four. Seltzer's home run was his third in the last three games and fourth of the season.
Sacred Heart reliever Brendan Coffey would prevent the Knights from getting any closer as he pitched a flawless ninth to finalize the series sweep.
Crebs provided the Knights 2.1 innings of hitless relief, while striking out two in the loss.
The Knights return to action with their final home series of the season next weekend when they welcome Central Connecticut State to Teaneck. The three-game series begins on Friday, May 11 at 3:00 p.m.
