BALTIMORE, Md. – The Fairleigh Dickinson baseball team dropped both games of its doubleheader at UMBC, falling 2-1 and 14-1 at Alumni Field on Friday afternoon.
The Knights (7-14) struggled to generate offense against the Retrievers' (9-15) pitching staff in the twinbill. Both games were seven-inning contests.
Freshman
Evan Raiburn started game one for the Knights and allowed just the one earned run across his 5.2 innings of work but the home team tallied two runs in the sixth to take the low-scoring win.
In game two, UMBC posted seven runs in the first inning as they cruised to the victory.
Game One: Fairleigh Dickinson 1, UMBC 2
In Friday's opener, Raiburn gave his team a great chance to win but UMBC starter Chase Bailey was equally stingy.
After three scoreless frames, the Knights struck first with a run in the top of the fourth. Sophomore left fielder
Mike Veit led off with a walk and moved over to third when senior right fielder
Jason Fatzinger followed with an opposite-field single.
Veit would score as the Knights' lone run of the contest on an
Evan McDonald groundout.
The Retrievers answered in the sixth and took the lead for good. AJ Wright led off with a single and then moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. Following a walk and a sacrifice bunt, Christian Torres came through with the game-changing knock -- a single to right -- which plated Wright and teammate Zach Bright for a 2-1 UMBC edge.
UMBC closer Stephen Schoch came on in the seventh and allowed a two-out single to
Joe O'Rourke before nailing down his sixth save of the season.
Each team totaled five hits in the game, with Torres recording the game's lone mult-hit performance by tallying three knocks in the win.
Game Two: Fairleigh Dickinson 1, UMBC 14
In game two, the Knights jumped on top with a run in their first turn at bat.
Sophomore center fielder
Brandon Seltzer drew a one-out walk and Veit followed with a base hit.
With two away, Veit dashed to steal second, which allowed Seltzer to complete the double steal by racing home with the game's first run. But the Knights were unable to build off the momentum as the Retrievers immediately turned the tables.
In the home first, Fairleigh Dickinson freshman right-hander
Trent Valentine loaded the bases with a pair of walks and a hit batsman. Next, the cleanup hitter Torres knocked in two runs with a single through the right side of the infield.
Valentine would strike out the next Retriever but a balk would net the home team's third run. The Knights' right-hander walked the next batter and then allowed a two-run single, which marked the end of his afternoon and resulted in a 4-1 lead for the home team.
Interim head coach
Justin McKay turned to
James Donlon in relief but he allowed two more runs to score on two hits before ending the long inning with a fly out.
Freshman right-hander
Chris Quijano relieved Donlon in the second and temporarily quieted the Retrievers' bats, however, they would break loose again in the fourth.
Four singles, a bases-loaded hit by pitch and a wild pitch resulted in four more runs for the home team, which enhanced the lead to 11-1.
After allowing the one run in the first, UMBC starter Mitchell Wilson settled in and earned his second win of the season by tossing four innings of one-run ball with two strikeouts.
With one hit apiece, Seltzer, Veit and freshman shortstop
Oliver Tavares accounted for the Knights' three hits in the loss.
For the second game in a row, Torres spearheaded the UMBC attack with four RBIs in a 2-for-3 effort. Wright also knocked in four with a pair of hits in the game.
The Knights return to action this Sunday, April 8 when they visit Seton Hall. First pitch is set for 3:00 p.m. in South Orange, N.J.
