STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- The Wagner College Seahawks completed the four-game sweep of the Fairleigh Dickinson baseball team on Sunday, topping the Knights 6-1 at Richmond County Bank Ballpark.
For the second game in a row, the Knights (10-28, 1-17 NEC) struggled to generate offense against Wagner pitching as the first-place Seahawks (30-12, 15-3 NEC) extended their win streak to seven.
Freshman outfielder
Connor Stanton tallied a multi-hit game in the loss, finishing 2-for-4 with a double, while
Corbin Dunnuck,
Peter Theodorellis and
Mike Veit tallied one hit apiece to account for the Knights' five in the ballgame.
After starter
Evan Raiburn surrendered five runs (four earned) over the first two frames, freshman classmate
Aaron Cohn came on and pitched 4.2 innings of one-run ball for the Knights. Cohn was relieved in the seventh by
Chris Quijano, who retired four of the last five Seahawk batters.
The Seahawks took a 1-0 edge in the bottom of the first when Freddie Sabido knocked home leadoff man Nick Mascelli with a single to right. Mascelli was on base all day long, finishing 3-for-5 with three runs scored. The home team added two more in the inning on a fielder's choice and an FDU error.
Leading 3-0 in the second, Sabido knocked in the fourth run with a single before a sacrifice fly by Kyle Cala increased the cushion to five. After homering twice on Saturday, Sabido continued his stellar weekend on Sunday and finished the game 3-for-4 with three RBIs and a run scored.
The Knights tallied their lone run of the contest in the top of the fifth off of reliever Koby Bishop, who had just entered the game. Dunnuck led off with an infield single and moved to third when Stanton followed with a double. Shortstop
Oliver Tavares picked up the RBI with a groundout to make it a 5-1 game before Bishop retired the side with a strikeout.
An RBI single by Sabido in the sixth capped the scoring and solidified the win for the home team. Bishop (3-1) would tally three innings with just the one run allowed to earn the victory.
The Knights return home for their next seven games beginning with a four-game series against Sacred Heart next weekend. The series opener is set for 3:00 p.m. on Friday, May 4 at Naimoil Family Baseball Complex.
