STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – The Fairleigh Dickinson baseball team dropped both games of its doubleheader at Wagner on Saturday falling 6-3 in game one and 4-0 in game two at Richmond County Bank Ballpark.
After falling in game one on Saturday, junior right-hander
Corey Zeller took the ball for the Knights (10-27, 1-16 NEC) in game two and went the distance, allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits with four strikeouts across his seven frames.
The Knights were held to just two hits in the second game as Wagner (29-12, 14-3 NEC) right-hander Pat Gallagher notched a complete-game shutout with six punch-outs.
Game One: Wagner 6, Fairleigh Dickinson 3
The Knights got off to a great start on Saturday as they notched a run in their first turn at bat to stake redshirt-senior
Joe Flack a 1-0 lead before he took the mound.
With two outs in the first, the Knights strung together three straight singles.
Evan McDonald slapped one through the left side,
Owen VonEsslinger lined his base hit to right and then
Oliver Tavares knocked in McDonald with a single to left.
Wagner starter Neil Abbatiello (6-0) picked off VonEsslinger to escape the early jam and would keep the Knights off the board until the sixth.
The home team wasted no time answering back as they netted three runs in their half of the first, highlighted by designated hitter Freddy Sabido's two-run homer. Sabido finished 2-for-2 with two home runs, three RBIs, two runs scored and a walk in the win.
The Seahawks added two more in the second with a Tyler Sanfilippo RBI triple. He would score with the team's fifth run on a wild pitch. In the bottom of the third, Sabido launched his second blast of the day – a solo shot – which gave his team a comfortable 6-1 lead.
Flack would hold the Seahawks down in the fourth and fifth, which allowed his offense to chip away at the deficit. A two-out double in the top of the sixth by McDonald set the table for VonEsslinger, who drove home his teammate with a double of his own to make it a 6-2 game.
Freshman
Austin Crebs came on and pitched a scoreless sixth and the Knights would put the pressure on the Seahawks in the top of the seventh.
First-year Knight
Connor Stanton led off with a single and two batters later,
Steven Yelin delivered a pinch-hit knock. The third freshman to step in, pinch-hitter
Peter Theodorellis loaded the bases with an infield single, which marked the end of Abbatiello's day.
Sophomore center fielder
Brandon Seltzer was next and came through with the Knights' fourth hit of the inning – an RBI single through the left side – however, Wagner closer Nick Rubino would retire the next two Knights in order to nail down his seventh save of the season.
Game 2: Wagner 4, Fairleigh Dickinson 0
After a scoreless first, the Seahawks plated a run against Zeller in the bottom of the second with an RBI triple from Joe Silverstrone.
Zeller kept the Seahawks quiet until the fifth but the FDU bats were unable to get anything going against the Wagner starter Gallagher.
Gallagher began the game by walking Seltzer and permitted two more free passes in the third but did not allow a hit until sophomore left fielder
Mike Veit doubled to lead off the fourth.
The Seahawks added to their lead with two more tallies in the fifth. Three-straight, two-out knocks netted the home team both runs with Sean Mazzio providing an RBI single and Phil Capra hitting an RBI double.
McDonald was responsible for the Knights' other hit in the game as singled with one out in the sixth but Gallagher thwarted any chance of a rally by retiring the next two Knights.
The home team scratched across one more run in the sixth with a sacrifice fly, which finalized the 4-0 win.
These two teams close out the series with a single game tomorrow. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m.
