TEANECK, N.J. -- The Fairleigh Dickinson baseball team held a 2-0 lead but saw Lafayette score 10 unanswered runs in Tuesday's home opener at the Naimoli Family Baseball Complex.
Senior right fielder
Jason Fatzinger continued his outstanding start to the season with another multi-hit game -- his third in four outings -- finishing 2-for-4 with a run scored and a double. Fatzinger is now batting .500 on the season.
Freshman third baseman Adam Frank logged a 2-for-4 performance for the Knights, who managed just five hits against the stingy pitching of the Leopards (6-6) in the loss.
After the Knights saw a quality scoring chance go by the wayside in the first inning when sophomore center fielder
Brandon Seltzer was nabbed at the plate trying to score on a wild pitch, the team responded by netting a pair of runs in the second to stake freshman right-hander Austin Crebs a 2-0 lead.
Fatzinger followed a leadoff walk with a double, and two batters later, Frank came through with his first career RBI by delivering a base hit up the middle. The next batter, freshman second baseman Jason Ortiz, followed with a well-placed bunt, which scored Fatzinger for the Knights' second tally.
Unfortunately for the Knights, the Lafayette pitching staff settled in and prevented the home team from scoring again. Southpaw starter Mark Anderson provided his team with four innings before giving way to the eventual winner David Guisti (2-0), JP Woodward and Michael Dunn, who combine for five scoreless frames.
With the Knights offensive scuffling, the Leopards broke loose against Crebs in the top of the fourth. A two-run double and a two-run homer by Brandon Pozivak and Steven Cohen resulted in four runs and a lead they would not relinquish.
Crebs' day concluded in with two outs away in that fourth inning as he was relieved by classmate Evan Raiburn, who escaped the inning without any further damage. Crebs allowed seven hits and struck out three on the afternoon.
Raiburn pitched 2.1 scoreless before freshman Trent Valentine came on in the seventh. The Leopards would tack on four more runs in the seventh via two-run single from Trey Durrah and an FDU error allowed two more to score.
Lafayette would add two more in the eighth when Mark Glover singled to right field. Glover finished 3-for-5 with two runs and two RBI to lead the Leopards in the win.
The Knights are back in action this weekend when they play a four-game series Friday-Sunday at Delaware State.
