Baseball Drops Friday Tilt to LIU Brooklyn 4-1

Box Score

TEANECK, N.J. -- The Fairleigh Dickinson baseball team dropped the second of three games this weekend with LIU Brooklyn, 4-1 at the Naimoli Family Baseball Complex on Friday afternoon.

Sophomore outfielder Brandon Seltzer paced the Fairleigh Dickinson (7-11, 0-5 NEC) offense with a 2-for-4 effort including the one run scored.

The FDU bats were held in check by LIU Brooklyn (12-10, 4-1 NEC) starter Zach Pederson, who notched a complete-game, striking out five with six hits and allowing one unearned run. Offensively, LIU was led by shortstop Luis Arias (3-for-3) and Brock Hallum (2-for-5).

Freshman right-hander Austin Crebs started for the Knights and lasted six, permitting three earned runs and six hits, while striking out three. Crebs surrendered two runs on one hit in the second inning as the Blackbirds scratched across their first run with a fielder's choice and the second on a delayed double steal.

After tallying just four baserunners over the first six frames, the Knights' best opportunity to break through against Pederson came in the seventh. Seltzer sliced a one-out double to deep right field and then scored when designated hitter Joe O'Rourke reached second base on an LIU defensive miscue. O'Rourke moved over to third on a balk but Pederson buckled down and retired the next two Knights in order.

Trailing 4-1 in the eighth, the Blackbirds appeared poised to break the game open with runners in scoring position and nobody out, however, interim coach Justin McKay turned to relievers Corbin Dunnuck and Joe Flack to escape the jam. After a wild pitch, which put runners on second and third, Dunnuck struck out a batter and then induced a tapper back to the mound. With two away, Dunnuck walked the next Blackbird and Flack came on with the bases loaded. On the fifth pitch of the at bat, the Knights' closer netted a groundout to shortstop to keep the Blackbirds at bay and keep the deficit at three runs.

After going down quietly in the eighth, the Knights received a one-out single from sophomore left fielder Mike Veit in the ninth, however, Peterson recorded a game-ending double play to finalize the complete-game victory.

In addition to his 2-for-4 effort at the plate, Seltzer stole his team-leading sixth base of the season.

Flack totaled 1.1 innings of scoreless relief with a pair of strikeouts on the afternoon, while freshman Chris Quijano was the Knights' first reliever to enter the game and tossed an inning, allowing one unearned run and striking out one.

These two teams close out the three-game series tomorrow. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m. in Teaneck.
