Knights Late Rally Not Enough; Fall 9-5 at CCSU

Box Score

NEW BRITAIN, Conn. -- The Fairleigh Dickinson baseball dropped the second game of its three-game series with the Blue Devils of Central Connecticut State on Saturday afternoon, falling 9-5.

Freshman Trent Valentine got the nod for The Burgundy and Blue (7-8, 0-2) and went 4.1 innings on the mound receiving a no-decision, only allowing two runs on seven hits. Valentine shined in the first 2.1 innings before Dean Lockery scored on Buddy Dewaine's fielder's choice.

The Knights got on the scoreboard first, after a one-out single from Bobby Ramano in the first inning, Peter Theodorellis brought him home with a single to right center for the first run.

Then in the fourth inning, Theodorellis worked a leadoff walk, Jason Fatzinger then followed with a single to the left side to put two FDU runners on base with no outs. After a sacrifice bunt from Joe O'Rourke to move the runners up, Oliver Tavares then grounded out too short to bring home Theodorellis for the second run.

With the Knights up 3-2 in the bottom of the sixth inning, the Blue Devils scored two runs to take the 4-3 lead. The Knights would allow the first three batters to reach base. Aaron Cohn replaced Chris Quijano on the mound, and with the bases-loaded Peyton Stephens delivered with an RBI single to the right side to bring home two CCSU runs.

Trailing 6-3 in the top of the eighth inning, the Knights sprung back into the game, scoring two runs. Matt Armendinger came in as pinch-hitter and started things off with a single to left field, followed by another Fatzinger single, the Knights had runners on first and second with nobody out. O'Rourke was the next batter and delivered a single to the right side to load the bases. With the bases loaded and still no outs, Tavares knocked in Armendinger with a single up the middle. Jason Ortiz then delivered the next punch, knocking a single to the left side to bring home Fatzinger for the fifth run. CCSU relief pitcher Kyle Anderson was able to escape the jam, striking out Connor Stanton and getting Evan McDonald to fly out to center to end the threat.

The Blue Devils would respond in the bottom half, scoring three more runs to push the lead to 9-5, where they would silence the Knights in top of the ninth to clinch the second game.

On the day, FDU tallied 11 hits, both McDonald and Tavares went 2-for-4 at the plate, with Tavares also registering two RBIs. Outfielder Mike Veit chipped in an RBI in the fifth inning.

The Blue Devils were led by its top of the lineup, leadoff hitter Dean Lockery and No. 2 hitter Chris Kanios combined to go 6-for-11. Starting pitcher Mike Appel got the win for CCSU, tossing 6.2 innings, only allowing three runs on six hits.

Up next, the Knights will look to steal the third game from the Blue Devils tomorrow, with Corey Zeller taking the ball, first pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
