McDonald Hits for the Cycle in Thrilling 13-Inning Win Over La Salle

Box Score

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – Freshman third baseman Adam Frank's base hit in the bottom of the 13th inning gave the Fairleigh Dickinson baseball team a thrilling 9-8 extra-inning victory over La Salle at MCU Park on Thursday afternoon.

Frank laced a shot between the La Salle third baseman and the third base bag, which rolled down the line and easily plated classmate Connor Stanton with the game-winning run.

Junior catcher Evan McDonald had a day to remember as he accomplished the rare feat of hitting for the cycle in the victory.

The win extends the Knights' (5-4) winning streak to five, while the Explorers drop to 4-11 on the campaign.

The Knights led 8-2 heading to the eighth inning before the Explorers roared back with four in the eighth and two in the ninth to send the game to extras.

Fifth-year righthander and newly named closer, Joe Flack provided the Knights' with 5.1 innings of hard work on the mound. Flack, who made an errant throw in the ninth, which allowed the tying run to cross, buckled down and provided his team with some much-needed work across the final four frames to earn his first win of the season.

Heading into their second at bat, the Knights trailed 1-0 but quickly erased the small deficit with three tallies in the inning. Steven Yelin and Frank each had an RBI double and Jason Ortiz had an RBI single to net the runs.

In the bottom of the third, McDonald hammered a 1-0 pitch over the left field fence and nearly hit the Coney Island Thunderbolt ride, which towers behind the wall.

As a team, the Knights totaled seven doubles in the contest including a run of three straight in the seventh inning, which helped stretch a 4-2 lead out to 8-2.

Freshman right-hander Dom Spinoso started and went three innings allowing one run and was followed by classmate Chris Quijano, who provided three frames of scoreless relief.

Leading 8-6 in the ninth, Flack – who recorded the final out of the eighth – looked to net his fourth save in the team's last five games.

He retired the first man but then surrendered a solo blast to Connor Hinchcliffe to make it a one-run game. Hinchcliffe pitched the first four innings before remaining in the game as the designated hitter, where he scored three runs and drew four walks.

With two outs, Flack allowed a walk and the runner moved into scoring position with a stolen base. The Knights right-hander appeared to have escaped the jam when he induced a tapper back to the mound but his throw to first baseman James Donlon was low and it got away from Donlon, which allowed the runner to score all the way from second.

Flack remained undeterred and dug deep and totaled 83 pitches across his 5.1 innings to keep extending the game for the Knights and set up the win in the 13th.

Stanton singled to lead off the frame, stole second and moved to third on an excellent sacrifice bunt from freshman Brad Levinson.

Facing a full count, Frank laced the payoff pitch past the diving third baseman for the walk-off win.

Frank finished 3-for-5 with two runs and two RBIs and classmate Ortiz was 2-for-5 with a pair of RBis.

McDonald completed his cycle with a 12th-inning triple and finished 4-for-6 with three runs and two RBI in the victory.

The Knights return to action on Saturday at MCU Park when they take on Pennsylvania in a doubleheader beginning at noon.
