DOVER, Del. – The Fairleigh Dickinson baseball team completed its four-game sweep of Delaware State by winning Sunday's doubleheader at Soldier Field.

The Knights (4-4) received a complete game shutout from junior right-hander
Corey Zeller to take game one 3-0 before edging the Hornets (2-12) 5-4 in game two.

Game 1: Fairleigh Dickinson 3, Delaware State 0

A first-inning RBI double by junior catcher
Evan McDonald provided all the run support Zeller would need in Sunday's opening game.

McDonald's opposite field two-bagger knocked home
Bobby Romano and gave the Knights a 1-0 lead in their first turn at bat.

With Zeller efficiently breezing through the Hornets, the Knights would add a run in the fifth and one more in the sixth to complete the scoring. Both runs came via DSU miscues as the home team.

In the fifth, with runners on the corners, McDonald stole second and induced an errant throw by the DSU catcher, which allowed Romano to scamper home from third with the Knights' second tally.

Then in the sixth, freshman Adam Frank reached on a walk, moved to second on a fielder's choice and then claimed third and home thanks to a pair of passed balls.

The three runs proved to be more than enough for Zeller, who needed only 58 pitches to get through the first six frames before laboring through 32 more in the final frame to close out the complete-game victory.

Across his seven innings of work, Zeller scattered six hits, allowed two walks and struck out three to net his first win of the campaign.

With one hit apiece, McDonald, Romano,
Jason Fatzinger and Steven Yelin accounted for the Knights' four knocks.

Game 2: Fairleigh Dickinson 5, Delaware State 4

For the third time in the four tries, the Knights escaped with a one-run win in game two.

As he did in game one, it was McDonald who provided the team with an early lead as he knocked in
Brandon Seltzer with a first-inning sacrifice fly.  Seltzer had opened the game with a single, moved to second on a sac bunt and stole third.

The Hornets responded with a three-spot in the second inning against FDU freshman starter Chris Quijano. A pair of singles sandwiched an FDU error, which set the table for Rich Rountree and Alex Vasquez to knock in a total of three runs with singles.

With runners in scoring position and still nobody out, Quijano was able to limit the damage by retiring the next three Hornets in order to keep the deficit at 3-1.

The Knights got a run back in the top of the third as Fatzinger continued his great start to the season with an RBI double.
Owen VonEsslinger scored from first on Fatzinger's hit after reaching with a two-out single.

The Hornets would rebuild the lead to two in the fifth after the first two men reached and the leadoff man scored from third on a wild pitch.

A three-run sixth inning showed the Knights' resilience as they came from behind to take the lead. With one on and nobody out, Seltzer smacked a run-scoring double. The next batter,
Mike Veit, would reach on an error and help Seltzer score by drawing the defense's attention as he attempted to take second base. The Hornets would nab Veit on the basepaths but Seltzer stole home to make it a 4-4 game.

With two away, McDonald drew a walk and then VonEsslinger came through with the game-changing hit – an RBI double down the left field line – which gave the Knights the 5-4 edge heading to the bottom of the sixth.

On in relief of Quijano, who pitched the first three innings, freshman Aaron Cohn danced around an error to get through the fame. Cohn (1-1) picked up his first career win totaling 3.1 innings on the mound with three hits, three walks and one earned run.

Cohn retired the first Hornet in the seventh before surrendering a one-out walk. Head Coach
Gary Puccio turned to fifth-year right-hander
Joe Flack, who closed out both games on Saturday to shut the door.

After retiring the first man he faced, Flack gave up a pinch-hit single to the next batter, which put the tying run on third and the winning run on first. The veteran Flack buckled down and struck out the next batter on four pitches to net his third save in two days and complete the sweep.

The Knights leadoff man Seltzer led a nine-hit effort with a 2-for-5 performance that included two runs, two RBIs and two stolen bases. VonEsslinger recorded three hits in his four plate appearances including what ultimately proved to be the game-winning hit.
