PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Led by junior guard
Darnell Edge's 15 second-half points, the Fairleigh Dickinson men's basketball team captured a 73-67 NEC road win over Robert Morris at PPG Paints Arena on Saturday afternoon.
After connecting on just 1-of-6 in the first half, Edge sprung to life in the second stanza scoring 15 of his team-high 18 points. The junior guard knocked down four 3-pointers and nabbed seven rebounds in the win.
The Knights (8-15, 5-7 NEC), who led for most of the game, tallied 19 second-chance points thanks to 15 offensive rebounds -- their second-highest output of the season. Sophomore forward
Kaleb Bishop continued his outstanding play of late by scoring 15 points (7-of-12 FG) and contributing to the Knights' rebounding performance by nabbing eight caroms.
Freshman forward
Noah Morgan matched Bishop's 15 tallies to go along with six boards and classmate
Jahlil Jenkins scored 11 with seven assists as the Knights capped their three-game road trip with a 2-1 record.
Three Colonials (13-12, 7-5 NEC) logged double figures led by sophomore guard Dachon Burke, who scored 19 with eight rebounds and five assists.
"We need to play all of our games on Saturdays," joked head coach
Greg Herenda following the win. "These kids make mistakes but they are extremely resilient. That was 100 percent a total team effort today."
"We gave the Knight of the game award to
Mike Schroback -- he came in and made a critical three in the first half when we needed it most -- and we could have given it to six or seven guys."
Saturday's win is Herenda's first road victory over the Colonials in five career meetings. "Robert Morris has given us problems out here for years but today our young guys didn't know any better. Jahlil, Noah, and Kaleb were huge and then Darnell finished the job. I am very proud of this team and staff -- now we just need to be more consistent down the stretch."
The Knights led 16-10 at the second media time out aided by six points from Bishop and a strong defensive start, which held the Colonials to 3-for-12 over that span. Out of the break, the Colonials immediately answered with seven straight highlighted by a 3-pointer from Charles Bain.
Schroback's 3-pointer with 4:06 to play in the half helped the Knights regain control as part of a 12-5 run and led to FDU scoring the final seven points of the stanza to carry a 37-26 advantage into the locker room.
Jenkins paced the Knights in the opening stanza with nine points, three assists and two rebounds, while Bishop scored eight with four boards and two steals. The Knights shot 40.5 percent overall and dominated on the glass 24-15 including 10 offensive rebounds, which led to a 13-0 advantage in second-chance points.
Burke topped the Colonials' first-half scoresheet with eight points, five rebounds and three assists.
In the second half, the Colonials would get as close as five points but the Knights had the answer each time. After a 1-for-6 start from the field, junior guard
Darnell Edge came to life in the second half for FDU.
Edge connected on 4-of-5 shots, including three trifectas in the stanza and came up clutch as he continuously answered Colonials buckets down the stretch to help the Knights preserve the victory.
The Knights' work on the offensive glass proved to be the difference in the win as both teams made nine 3-pointers and 10 free throws but FDU earned six more field goal opportunities (27-of-64) compared to Robert Morris' (24-of-58).
Herenda added, "We have a huge home weekend coming up but we just need to have another great week of practice and continue to improve."
The Knights return home for their next two contests beginning this Thursday, February 8 against Sacred Heart. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m at the Rothman Center.
