BRONX, N.Y. -- The Fairleigh Dickinson men's tennis team finished out an impressive weekend at Fordham's Four-in-the-Fall tournament by winning two of the five flights.

Knights represented the finalists in both the Singles Flight C and Doubles Flight A, meaning FDU would take the flights regardless of the outcomes. The doubles match pitted sophomore Andris Gudins and freshman Mehdi Dhouib against sophomores Niclas Pietsch and Eduardo Cabral, with Gudins and Dhouib prevailing in a close 7-5 match.

For the singles flight, junior Ivan Solans Diaz and sophomore Maciej Autuch advanced to the final, ironically also defeating teammates of theirs in the semifinal. Solans Diaz earned a 6-1, 6-1 win over freshman Ryu Kozuki, and Autuch won his match against Cabral 6-4, 4-6, 10-8. The final between Autuch and Solans Diaz was not played, but the match will take place on FDU's campus at a later date.

In Singles Flight A, Dhouib also advanced to the final after earning a 6-2, 6-2 win over a La Salle competitor. The freshman faced another La Salle opponent in the final, dropping the first set before being forced to retire down 2-0 in the second set.

In Singles Flight B, Gudins put forth a courageous effort against a Fordham foe, coming back in the second set to force a super-tiebreaker. The match, however, ended with the Fordham player coming out on top, 6-3, 3-6, 10-8.

Pietsch and sophomore Moric Budinszky each earned singles consolation victories as well. Budinszky defeated a Concordia (N.Y.) adversary after falling in the first set. He battled back to win 6-4 in the second set and then took the super-tiebreaker as well, 13-11, to win the match. Pietsch also played to a tiebreaker in his match against a La Salle competitor, winning by a score of 6-2, 3-6, 10-6.

The doubles tandem of Autuch and Kozuki also played in the final of their flight, falling to a Fordham duo by a score of 6-3.

Overall, the Knights finished the two-day event with 18 wins, including 12 in singles and six in doubles play. 

FDU next competes in the ITA Northeast Regional starting October 11, hosted on the campus of Princeton.

DAY ONE RECAP

The Fairleigh Dickinson men's tennis team won 12 of 15 matches in a well-played first day of competition in the Fordham Four-in-the-Fall Saturday.

The Knights won seven of nine singles matches, including one match where two teammates faced each other, and they also picked up doubles victories in five of six matches. Six of nine players went unbeaten over the course of the day.

Sophomore Mehdi Dhouib earned a straight-set victory in singles, 6-2, 6-4, over his Fordham opponent and teamed with sophomore Andris Gudins to advance to the final of his doubles flight. The duo first downed a Fordham duo, 7-6 (4) and then beat a La Salle pairing by a score of 6-3 in the semifinal to advance to tomorrow's championship. Gudins also earned a victory in his singles match, defeating a Concordia (N.Y.) foe, 6-4, 6-4.

Sophomore Youssef Sader played an impressive singles match in defeating a Fordham adversary, 6-1, 6-4, and the win advanced him to play his teammate, sophomore Maciej Autuch, in the next round of singles. Autuch won the match between the two, 6-3, 6-1, to advance in the flight. Junior Ivan Solans Diaz defeated a Fordham opponent, 7-6 (6), 6-1 in his singles match, while sophomore Eduardo Cabral and freshman Ryu Kozuki each advanced past Concordia opponents in the C slngles flight. Cabral advanced with a 6-2, 6-3 straight-set win, while Kozuki battled to a 6-3, 2-6, 10-2 victory.

Sophomore Niclas Pietsch played a hard-fought singles match against a Fordham adversary, taking the first set, 6-3, before ultimately falling in the second and the supertiebreaker by scores of 6-4, 10-8. Sophomore Moric Budinszky also competed in singles, falling to a La Salle foe, 6-4, 6-0.

In doubles, Cabral and Pietsch won each of their matches in the A flight by scores of 6-3, first against a La Salle duo in the quarterfinal and then over a Fordham duo in the semifinal. They advance to play teammates Gudins and Dhouib in the final tomorrow.

Autuch and Kozuki also paired up in doubles to earn a victory over a Fordham duo, 6-3. Budinszky and Solans Diaz suffered the only defeat for the Knights in doubles, falling to a Fordham team by a score of 6-3.
