HACKENSACK, N.J. – The Fairleigh Dickinson volleyball team fell in straight sets 25-22, 25-18, 25-22 to Coppin State at the Rothman Center on Wednesday night.
In the loss, freshman setter
Corina Beimers netted her seventh double-double of the season by finishing with 17 assists and 11 digs. Junior outside hitter
Erika Sullivan led the Knights' offense with 13 kills, which resulted in her 10
th double-digit kill performance of the season.
Miajavon Coleman double-doubled with 10 kills and 11 digs to pace the Eagles (9-19) in the victory. Although the Eagles recorded just five kills more than the Knights, 39-34, they posted a .253 attack percentage compared to the home team's .094 rate.
The Eagles jumped out to a 10-4 lead in the first set. Facing set point, 24-18, the Knights mounted a comeback by notching four straight points including one kill apiece from
Jessica Throckmorton and
Abigail Strebig. Now leading by two, Sydney Hicks closed out the set for the Eagles with a kill and stopped the Knights' momentum.
In the second set, trailing by four, the Knights fought back with three straight kills from Sullivan, Throckmorton and Strebig to close to within one. However, the Eagles regrouped and scored seven of the next eight to take control of the set en route to a 2-0 lead.
A kill by Sullivan in the final frame gave the Knights a 12-10 edge before the Eagles recaptured the lead for good. An FDU service error set off a string of five straight tallies for the Eagles, who grabbed a 15-13 advantage.
The Knights would stay within two points on several occasions but never led again as the Eagles finalized the straight-set victory.
Defensively for the Knights, Strebig totaled five blocks for the third time in the last four outings, while freshmen
Sophia Spiridonakos and
Brooke Stevens each finished with three.
The Knights are back in action this weekend when they welcome Central Connecticut State and Bryant to the Rothman Center in their final two home contests of the season. First up is CCSU on Friday, November 2 followed by senior day on Saturday, November 3 against Bryant. First serve is set for 5:00 p.m. on both days.
