HACKENSACK, N.J. – The Fairleigh Dickinson volleyball team fell in five sets (24-26, 25-16, 26-28, 25-23, 11-15) to Saint Peter's at the Rothman Center on Wednesday night.
Wednesday's contest marked the second meeting between the two teams this season. The Knights won in straight sets in Denver at the Pioneer Classic back on September 8.
Sophomore
Magdalena Maksimovic and freshman
Jessica Throckmorton each tallied 13 kills for the Knights (2-15) in the loss, while first-year libero
Jaelyn Young amassed a career-high 27 digs.
Fairleigh Dickinson freshman setter
Corina Beimers double-doubled with 23 assists and 19 digs in the five-set defeat.
For Saint Peter's (5-16), reigning MAAC Rookie of the Week, Karen Ramiu led all players with 20 kills, while Angeleyshka Curbelo totaled 13 kills and 25 digs.
In the opening set, the Knights erased an early 6-2 deficit to eventually take a 19-17 lead. The Knights tied the game when freshman
Brooke Stevens put away an overpass and moved in front thanks to a double block from Stevens and
Erika Sullivan.
After Saint Peter's retook the lead, 24-21, the Knights fended off set point by scoring three straight, including kills from Throckmorton and classmate
Kati Quaintance. Tied at 24, the Peacocks closed out the win with an attack error by FDU and a kill from Ramiu.
The Knights rebounded in the second set and won comfortably. Throckmorton and sophomore outside hitter
Erin Singer helped the Knights score the final five points of the set to win by nine and even the match 1-1.
The third and fourth frames featured highly-contested battles with the teams trading long volleys and exchanging leads. In the third, trailing 25-24, the Knights earned a set-point opportunity after Quaintance tallied a kill and Ramiu committed an error, however, the Peacocks answered with three straight to take a 2-1 lead.
In the fourth set, the Knights held a 22-16 cushion before the Peacocks stormed back with seven of the next eight points. A pair of long rallies went in favor of the Knights as they scored the final two points to earn the 25-23 win and force a deciding fifth set.
The final frame saw the Peacocks race out to a 4-0 lead. The Knights would fight back with four of the next five points, including a kill by Maksimovic to make it a 5-4 game. The teams tied at six and eight before an ace by Saint Peter's defensive specialist Gabriela Castro and a kill aided a 3-0 spurt for the visitors.
A pair of kills from Singer and Stevens brought the Knights to within one, 12-11, before the Peacocks closed out the win by scoring the final three points of the night.
In addition to her five kills, Singer added a career-best nine total blocks in the loss. The nine blocks are tied for most by a Knight this season, matching Quaintance's total at NJIT back on September 25.
The Knights return to NEC action for their next two matches as they head on the road this weekend. First up is a 7 p.m. start at Central Connecticut on Friday, October 5. The Knights will then square off with Bryant the following day at 5 p.m. in Smithfield, R.I.
