Men's Tennis Continues ITA Northeast Regional

PRINCETON, N.J. -- The Fairleigh Dickinson men's tennis team played in day two of the ITA Northeast Regional Friday hosted at Princeton.

Freshman Mehdi Dhouib played the only singles match of the day for the Knights. Dhouib provided a tough challenge for his opponent Alan Nunez Aguilera of St. John's, falling in a close 6-4, 7-5 match.

The sophomore doubles duo of Andris Gudins and Niclas Pietsch also played a strong opening match in the main draw, but came up short in a 8-7 defeat to Cornell's Jake Hansen and Pietro Rimondini.

Playing in a qualifying doubles match, sophomore Moric Budinszky and junior Ivan Solans Diaz suffered a close 8-7 (4) loss to a fellow NEC duo in Guido Argentini and Michael Plutt of Bryant.

DAY ONE RECAP

The Fairleigh Dickinson men's tennis team opened the ITA Northeast Regional tournament Thursday with two singles victories in the qualifying draw.

Sophomores Moric Budinszky and Niclas Pietsch each won their first qualifying matches of the day. Budinszky battled to a 6-3, 1-6, 10-8, victory over Fairfield's Lewis Edwards. Pietsch faced tough competition from fellow NEC opponent Michael Plutt of Bryant, with Pietsch winning the close battle, 7-6 (9), 7-5.

Both Budinszky and Pietsch, however, suffered defeats in their next matches to end their qualifying runs. Budinszky dropped a 6-2, 7-6 (3) match to Monmouth's Will Cooke Wharton, while Pietsch suffered a 6-2, 7-5 defeat to Dartmouth's John Speicher.

Sophomore Andris Gudins also competed in the qualifying singles draw, but he could not make it past his Cornell foe Joseph McAllister in a 6-0, 6-3 loss.

The main draws for both doubles and singles begins Friday, with freshman Mehdi Dhouib playing his first singles match of the event. The doubles teams of Gudins and Pietsch along with Budinszky and junior Ivan Solans Diaz will also begin competition Friday morning.
