Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's Basketball Clipped by Mount St. Mary's, 55-52

EMMITSBURG, Md. – The Fairleigh Dickinson women's basketball team had a pair of chances to tie the game on its final possession, but the two 3-point attempts did not go, and the Knights fell at Mount St. Mary's 55-52 on Monday night.

Fairleigh Dickinson (9-6, 1-3 NEC) had the ball and a chance to take the lead with 28 seconds left. However, the Knights got called for five-second violation inbounding the ball after a timeout that gave Mount St. Mary's (6-9, 3-1 NEC) it back with a 53-52 lead.

Kayla Agentowicz hit the final two free throws for the Mountaineers with 27 seconds left.

The Knights were down by as many 13 in the third quarter and came back to take the lead, 44-43, on a Natalie Zamora 3-pointer from the right corner with 6:31 left in the game.

Courtney Blankenship would tie the game at 50 with a pair of free throws with 4:03 to play. Peniel M'Bikata drove to the hoop and finished with 2:52 left to tie the game for the final time at 52.

Caroline Hummell would make a free throw and layup to give the Mountaineers a three-point lead with 64 seconds left. Madelynn Comly got the Knights to within a point after she cut back door and converted a pass from Amina Markovic with 41 ticks to go.

Fairleigh Dickinson got a defensive stop with the score 53-52 and called time with 28 seconds left. The Knights then could not get the ball, and The Mount took over and got the two free throws from Agentowicz to make it a three-point lead.

Both of the Knights' chances to tie were contested shots from Kamrin Weimer.

"I am proud of the team for coming back from 13 down to take the lead," said head coach Peter Cinella. "We had the lead, and then did not take care of the ball, and in a low possession game 20 turnovers is too much."

The Mountaineers built their 13-point lead on the back of outscoring the Knights 14-5 in the second quarter and held the Knights to one made field goal in the second stanza. That came after Fairleigh Dickinson led 13-10 after the opening 10 minutes of action.

Cinella added, "Mount played well and being 3-1, you have to like their defensive pressure. That bothered us tonight and did not allow us to get into some of our sets."

Markovic led all scorers with 15 points on 6-of-11 shooting. The senior added eight rebounds. Comly finished the night with nine points.

Fairleigh Dickinson turned the ball over 20 times; including three times in the final two minutes. Mount St. Mary's was only able to score nine off those 20 miscues. The Mountaineers had 15 turnovers but had 15 assists compared to eight by the Knights.

Juliette Lawless led a trio of Mountaineers in double figures with 14 points. Agentowicz finished 13 and Daly Sullivan had 11. Rebecca Lee had four points, 12 rebounds, and four blocks off the bench for Mount St. Mary's.

The Knights return home this coming weekend and welcome Bryant and Central Connecticut to the Rothman Center. Fairleigh Dickinson plays Bryant on Saturday and Central Connecticut on Sunday.
