Women's Basketball Too Tough for St. Francis Brooklyn in 70-62 Win

BROOKLYN HEIGHTS, N.Y. -- Amina Markovic and Natalie Zamora each scored 18 points as the Fairleigh Dickinson women's basketball proved to be too tough for St. Francis Brooklyn on Friday night in a 70-62 win.

Fairleigh Dickinson (12-7, 4-4 NEC) withstood a 17-7 fourth-quarter run by St. Francis Brooklyn (7-12, 3-5 NEC) to get the road win and hand the Terriers just their second loss at home on the year.

Head coach Peter Cinella said postgame, "A great team win tonight. Everyone made contributions. Glad to see Amina play well in her hometown and for Natalie to play the way she did, it was a special game for her. Penny had some key drives and and-ones."

The Knights built a 55-41 fourth-quarter lead with 7:02 left on a Lauren Francillon jumper. The Terriers would then cut the lead down to four, 60-56, with 2:42 left.

St. Francis Brooklyn would get as close as four two more times, but Fairleigh Dickinson hit six free throws inside the last 68 seconds to preserve the win.

Fairleigh Dickinson built the lead out to nine in the third quarter twice. In the third, the Knights continued its efficient night on the offensive end by starting 7-of-8 from the floor and finished 9-of-13. The lead then swelled to 14, 50-36, after a 3-point play from Peniel M'Bikata and then a triple from Zamora.

Neither team started off well on the offensive end as both units shot under 25-percent from the floor in the first quarter. The Knights took a 14-11 at the end of the first on a Kamrin Weimer 3-pointer from the right wing.

Both Fairleigh Dickinson and St. Francis Brooklyn shot better than 40-percent from the field in the second stanza. The Knights went 3-of-4 from three. Defensively, the Knights blocked six shots and held the Terriers to 2-of-10 shooting from behind the arc in the first 20 minutes.

The Knights finished shooting 44-percent from the floor, 41-percent from 3-point range, and 84-percent from the free throw line.

Amin Markovic had nine first-half points to lead all scorers. Zamora's 18 points are a new career high for the junior. M'Bikata had 11 and, Madelynn Comly had 10 to make it four Knights in double figures.

Defensively, the Knights held the Terriers to 29-percent from three and 37-percent overall from the field.

Fairleigh Dickinson returns to Brooklyn on Monday night when it will take on LIU Brooklyn at 7 p.m.
