Women's Basketball Beats LIU Brooklyn for Fourth Straight Win

BROOKLYN, N.Y. -- A 21-point third quarter powered the Fairleigh Dickinson women's basketball team to a 61-49 win at LIU Brooklyn on Monday night.

The triumph is the fourth straight for Fairleigh Dickinson (13-7, 5-4 NEC). The Knights had not done that since the 2011-12 season.

Fairleigh Dickinson led 25-24 at halftime and then started the third quarter on a 17-2 run to build a 42-26 lead with 2:59 left in the period. Madelynn Comly scored seven of her team-high 13 points during the spurt.

Head coach Peter Cinella said post game, "It is tough to sweep on the road against two teams ahead of us in the standings. It wasn't one of our better games, but we found a way to pull it out. The third quarter was our best action. We moved the ball quickly and were on the attack. Our defense was very good for the most part, and the team did a good job rebounding."

LIU Brooklyn (8-13, 4-5 NEC) got as close as nine at the 2:18 mark of the fourth on a Drew Winter layup to make the score 55-46. The Knights would get a jumper from Natalie Zamora and free throws from Lauren Francillon and Comly to close out the game.

Defensively, the Knights held the Blackbirds to 27-percent from the field for the game and forced 11 misses along with five turnovers during the 17-2 run start the third. For the seventh time this season, the Knights held their opponents to below 25-percent from behind the arc--21-percent for LIU.

The free throw line proved to be the difference for Fairleigh Dickinson. There, the Knights went 21-of-26 (80.8%) compared to the Blackbirds, 10-of-12 (83.3%).

Deangelique Waithe led LIU Brooklyn with a game-high 24 points and 10 rebounds. Waithe was 9-of-18 from the field, the rest of the team combined for 8-of-45.

Amina Markovic and Peniel M'Bikata added 11 points each. Lauren Francillon added 11 rebounds--third game in last four with 10-plus on the glass. Markovic extended her double-figure scoring streak to 10 games.

Cinella added, "Penny and Maddie drove the ball well. Lou did a good job of getting into the offense quickly. Penny was elite once again defensively by hold LIU's top scorer in check the whole game."

The Knights head up to New England this coming weekend to conclude this four-game road stretch. Fairleigh Dickinson battles Bryant on Saturday and visits Central Connecticut on Monday.
