NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. -- A pair of first half goals from Niagara were enough to hold off Fairleigh Dickinson in the second half as the Purple Eagles topped the Knights 2-1.
"We were not committed to doing the little things again in the first half," said head coach
Eric Teepe. "We cannot keep putting ourselves in holes and then need things to go our way."
Courtney Betts and Eva Bachmann scored in the opening 45 minutes for Niagara (4-1-1). Fairleigh Dickinson (2-5) got the offense going in the second half -- 13 shots -- but were unable to break through until the 89 minute when
Sofia Albertsson made it a 2-1 game. The goal was the first of Albertsson's career.
Albertsson got on the end of a
Viktorija Miseljic through ball and beat Sabrina Locas in the Niagara goal from the left side of the box. Miseljic moved into the team lead in points with seven.
The Knights had a goal from
Jessi Reinhardt off a corner called back for a foul in the box against Fairleigh Dickinson in the 79th minute.
Early in the second half, Albertsson,
Elma Kolenovic, and
Jessi Reinhardt all had shots, but none crossed the line. Then over a span of four minutes (74th-78th), the Knights had four shots -- from, Kolenovic,
Jackson Bennett, Albertsson, and Kolenovic again -- and two of the Knights five corners. However, the Purple Eagles' defense withstood the pressure and the Knights out.
Betts opened the scoring for the Purple Eagles with her tally in the 14th minute on an assist from Bachmann. Bachmann then made it 2-0 with a strike 47 seconds left in the first half.
Fairleigh Dickinson held a 15-8 shot and 5-1 corner kick advantage on the night as well as forcing six saves out of Locas while
Cassandra Marcoux made only one.
The Knights return to action on Sunday at Buffalo at 12 p.m.
