Women's Soccer Battles Back to Tie Buffalo, 2-2

BUFFALO – Second half goals from Sofia Albertsson and Elma Kolenovic brought the Fairleigh Dickinson women's soccer team back to tie Buffalo, 2-2, in double overtime.

"We played well today," said head coach Eric Teepe afterward. "The big thing was we came right back after [and scored after allowing] the second goal. I am proud of the effort today, but we still need to do more of the little things. We put them under a lot of pressure and created chances."

Buffalo (1-4-1) scored once in the eighth minute and then in the 55th to take a two-goal lead over Fairleigh Dickinson (2-5-1).

Less than a minute after Buffalo made it 2-0, Albertsson tallied her second goal of the season when she headed home a corner kick from Stasi Torchia into the right side of the net to make it a 2-1 game. Torchia's helper was the sophomore's first of the season and career.

Kolenovic then tied the game with a header that came to her after a service from Gabby Garcia that was 45 yards from goal. The ball got to Kolenovic after it ricocheted past Laura Dougal, who came up to play the service. The junior also beat a Bull defender to the ball to put it home.

Kolenovic's goal was the fourth of the season for the junior. That total leads the team. Garcia's assist was her first collegiate point.

Fairleigh Dickinson almost tied the game in the 74th minute when Garcia put an effort on goal from 20 yards out that Laura Dougall was forced to tip off the crossbar to keep the game 2-1 in favor of the home Bulls.

Both Dougall and Amanda Fitzgerald were asked to make saves in overtime. Dougall turned away all three shots that the Knights got on goal. Fitzgerald made two stops of Bulls' chances and was helped by the post with another to keep the game tied. One of the two saves for Fitzgerald came against Julia Bentai when the sophomore Knight went down and two her left to stop Bentai, who got behind the Knight defense on the left side and shot from about 10 yards out.

Buffalo's goals came from Gurieena Jandu off a header in the eighth minute. Benati provided the assist. The second goal for the home side came from Carissima Cutrona that Kara Daly provided the assist.

The two sides were almost even in shots. The Knights held a 20-19 advantage, and the Bulls had an 8-7 advantage in shots on target.

"It was good for our mentality to get a result today," Teepe added. "We showed that we are going to keep battling all the way through until the final whistle."

The Knights return to action on Friday night at Gonzaga for a 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT clash with the Bulldogs.
