CHENEY, WASH. – Eastern Washington scored in the 87th minute to break a 2-2 tie to beat the Fairleigh Dickinson women's soccer team 3-2 on Sunday afternoon.
The Knights, who scored first, had tied the game at two on an
Elma Kolenovic goal in the 60th minute.
The game-winner for Eastern Washington (6-4) came on Devan Talley's first of the season. Talley got a pass from Delaney Romero inside the 18, turned and beat
Amanda Fitzgerald to the far-left post to give the home side the win.
Head coach
Eric Teepe said postgame, "We were pretty good today. Our mindset was much better than Friday, and we were prepared for the challenge that Eastern Washington posed."
Fairleigh Dickinson (2-7-1) got on the board through
Sofia Albertsson in the 18th minute. The freshman tallied her fourth of the season and scored for the fourth straight game.
"Sofia is starting to figure out the college game over here, and you can see that in each game she has played."
However, the Eagles quickly responded with the tying goal and one more to take a 2-1 lead. Both of the goals came from Chloe Williams as the senior scored in a span of 1:56 in the 19th and 21st minutes. The two goals were the third and fourth of the season for Williams.
On the hour mark,
Dara Battistoni stood over a free kick from about 35 yards out on the right wing and delivered the service into the box that Kolenovic flicked on with her head and past the Eastern Washington goalkeeper to tie the game at two for Fairleigh Dickinson.
The goal from Kolenovic was her fifth, which leads the team and tied for the Northeast Conference lead with Jenna West of Mount St. Mary's. Battistoni's assist was her first of the season.
Fairleigh Dickinson was able to use the tying goal from Kolenovic as an additional spark of the offense over next 15 minutes. Unfortunately for the Knights, none of the pressure led to a shot on goal as the Eagle defense was able to force the ball clear and kept Fairleigh Dickinson out of shooting range.
Teepe added, "We dominated the second half in the attacking third, but we are not making the plays needed to close out the game and score when we are in control of the game and situation."
Kolenovic tried to break the tie in the 79th minute with an attempt from a distance but that was wide left. Then in the 84th minute, Albertsson made a bid for her second of the game and the go-ahead goal, but her shot was flicked over the bar by Emily Busselman in the Eagle goal.
Fitzgerald finished with six saves on nine Eastern Washington shots on goal. Busselman finished with a pair of saves for Eastern Washington.
The Knights have a full week to rest before its next game. Cornell comes to University Stadium on Sunday, September 24 for a 3 p.m. start time. The game will be on NECFrontRow.com.
