WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. -- Fairleigh Dickinson and Monmouth played 77 minutes of scoreless soccer before Dana Scheriff provided the Hawks with the only goal needed for the 1-0 win.
Scheriff's goal, which came off an assist from Rachelle Ross, happened four minutes after
Jessi Reinhardt had a shot blocked off a free kick from 19 yards out at the top of the box. Monmouth (1-2-1) prevented the shot from getting through then broke through on Scheriff's goal.
Reinhardt hit the crossbar earlier in the second half on a shot that was over the head of Amanda Knaub in the Monmouth goal but did not get down in time to avoid the bar. The senior had a game-high five shots -- two on goal.
Viktorija Miseljic made a run into the attacking third from the midfield but pushed a shot just wide of the left post just before the hour mark.
In the second half, Fairleigh Dickinson (2-3) created seven shots, but just one forced a save from Knaub in the Monmouth goal.
"We played well in the second half, but sometimes you are unlucky. To me, the game was lost in the first half. We did not come out and compete," said head coach
Eric Teepe. "We allowed them to dictate the game [in the first half]. We are too good to allow teams to do that to us."
The teams played a scoreless first half. The two sides each had five shots. Three of Monmouth's tested
Amanda Fitzgerald in the Knights' goal and the sophomore kept them out.
Fairleigh Dickinson had some pressure up the wings against the Hawks' defense, but the crosses did not threaten. The Knights' best chance came from
Viktorija Miseljic in the 34th minute. The freshman was able to get a shot away from just inside the top of the 18, but it did not reach Amanda Knaub in the Monmouth goal.
Fairleigh Dickinson returns to action on Sunday at 1 p.m. when La Salle visits University Stadium.
