HACKENSACK, N.J. --
Elma Kolenovic's brace was all the offense the Fairleigh Dickinson women's soccer need against Rider on Sunday to win 2-0.
"As far as a result is concerned it was a bounce back for us," said head coach
Eric Teepe. " As far as our play, we have to learn how to recover and play a better game. We were very sluggish the whole game and did not do a good job of getting into defensive positions and free balls."
Kolenovic scored twice in the first half to bring her season goal total to three through the first four games.
Cassandra Marcoux made her collegiate debut and made three stops to get her first career win and shutout. Fairleigh Dickinson (2-2) is back to the .500 mark with the win.
The junior's first goal of the day came when she got on the end of a
Julia Shea cross in the 31st minute and beat Carmen Carbonell to the near left post.
Less than five minutes later Kolenovic got her second on a through ball from freshman
Alyssa Caggiano and fired from 12 yards out to be Carbonell.
Rider (0-2) tested freshman goalkeeper
Cassandra Marcoux in the first half, forcing Marcoux to make all three of her saves in the first 45 minutes. The Broncs fired five more shots in the second half, but none made it on frame.
The Broncs did have chances to get more chances on goal in the first 45 minutes with five corner kicks and eight total for the game. The Knights defense limited the Broncs to only two shots (both headers) directly off the Rider corners.
Fairleigh Dickinson had chances to add to its lead in the second half but could not get third to put the game out of reach.
Sofia Albertsson had a pair of shots in the opening five minutes of the stanza, but one was blocked, and one was cleared off the line by Maddie Lipton.
Jessi Reinhardt tested Amy Kozlowski, who replaced Carbonell at halftime, and turned away. Off the ensuing corner, Albertsson had another shot blocked, and
Jackson Bennett's header was wide after another Knights' corner.
"The whole second half was a matter of one goal, one way or the other," he added. "If we score, then it is over and if they score there is a good chance they get a second. We had some good opportunities and if we had a second person in we could have two more. We should have learned that from William & Mary on Friday."
Caggiano had an opportunity to get her first collegiate goal in the 68th minute. The freshman got behind the defense and put a shot on goal from a bouncing ball that hit the crossbar, came straight down and then off the line and out to keep the score at 2-0.
Fairleigh Dickinson outshot Rider 19-12 and 8-3 in shots on goal on the afternoon.
The Knights return to action on Friday down in West Long Branch at Monmouth for a Friday night tilt at 7 p.m.
