HACKENSACK, N.J. – Temple's Julia Dolan scored 2:48 into the first overtime period to get past Fairleigh Dickinson -- 3-2 -- in the season-opening game for both teams at a wet and rainy University Stadium Friday evening.
Dolan headed in a corner from Kayla Cunningham for her first goal of the season and gave Temple (1-0) the win after the Knights scored twice in the second half to force overtime.
Head coach
Eric Teepe told fduknights.com afterward, "We had some good and bad. We came out sluggish, with a lot of freshmen playing and they struggled to adapt to the college game. We did not start playing until the last 25 minutes, where controlled things. Unfortunately, we gave up a couple of soft goals today."
Both of Fairleigh Dickinson's (0-1) goals came from freshman
Viktorija Miseljic during the second 45 on Friday night. Miseljic scored in the 71st minute when she met a
Jessi Reinhardt corner kick.
The first-year Knight tied the game with 20 seconds to play when she got the final touch on a pass from
Daria Jones inside the six-yard box after the Knights won a corner kick. The product of Nis, Serbia is the first freshman to score on debut in the first game of the season since
Connie Lewis against Iona in 2013.
Temple opened the scoring inside the first 10 minutes of action once the game started at 9 p.m. a two-hour delay for lightning. Elena Falcone put home a shot that beat
Amanda Fitzgerald to her left from a flick on by Sarah McGlinn at the top of the 18.
The Knights had shots from
Jackson Bennett – in the 20th minute – and
Sofia Albertsson – 30th minute – that was off the mark to tie the game.
After the intermission, the Knights had a chance to get back level when
Jessi Reinhardt tried from a distance but was turned away by Jordan Nash in the Owl goal. Minutes later, Nash came charging out to cut down
Daria Jones who was trying to control a pass on the hour mark.
In the 66th minute, the Owls made it a two-goal advantage when Kerri McGinley put home a rebound off a shot from Djavon Dupree that came off of Fitzgerald.
Fairleigh Dickinson started to gain its footing late in the second half, which led to the two tallies for Miseljic.
Jackson Bennett had a shot saved by Jordan Nash off the same Reinhardt corner that led to the tying goal for the Knights.
Nash made six saves in goal for the Owls. Fitzgerald made a total of nine stops for the Knights.
Teepe added, "We had a lot of players get involved [six reserves saw time], and each of those players gave us something. I do not think anyone struggled and did a good job."
The Knights host Hartford on Sunday at 12 p.m. at University Stadium. The game can be watched live on NECFrontRow.com.
