HACKENSACK, N.J. – Three different goal scorers and timely saves from
Amanda Fitzgerald earned the Fairleigh Dickinson women's soccer team its first win of 2017, 3-1 over Hartford on Sunday at University Stadium.
"I thought our effort was fantastic. We started off well -- knocking the ball around -- and then they created a chance, and we got flustered by it. We then settled down after 20 minutes," said head coach
Eric Teepe.
Fairleigh Dickinson (1-1) got first half goals from
Daria Jones and
Viktorija Miseljic. Jones' goal – first of the season – came after Hartford had three corners and a shot from Julia Carr hit the crossbar.
Jones' scored on a header off a corner in the 16th minute off a corner kick from
Jessi Reinhardt. The goal was also her first of her career.
Miseljic got her third goal of the young season when she won a foot race to a through ball from fellow freshman
Sofia Albertsson and beat Maia Perez to the far-left post to double the lead for the Knights in the 37th minute. It was Albertsson's first point of the season.
Teepe said, "We got a goal on a set-piece, which will be important for us this season. The second goal was important for us as it put Hartford back on its heels a bit more."
Fitzgerald made two saves Hayley Nolan and Carr to keep Fairleigh Dickinson's one goal lead in the 23rd and 27th minutes. Fitzgerald finished five saves on the afternoon to pick up her seventh win of her career and first this season.
"Amanda was solid today. The one thing I liked was how aggressive she was in wanting the ball with her feet. We are then able to use her getting out of pressure situations. Then in the second half with how aggressive she was in coming off her lines," said Teepe.
Hartford had a corner kick in the closing seconds of the first 45 minutes, but no shot came of the opportunity.
Magalie Kayrouz got the Hawks to within one just 1:46 into the second half. It was her first of the season.
Elma Kolenovic provided the insurance goal for the Knights in the 76th minute. The junior put home a flick on from
Tara Heatley for her first of the season.
The Hawks were held to just two shots after the Knights made it 3-1. Fitzgerald stopped Ashley Claud in the 78th minute, and Kayrouz put a shot wide less than a minute later.
Hartford outshot Fairleigh Dickinson 10-6 and in shots on goal 6-4.
Teepe finished, "At this time of year, it is about the little things and correct them. Both games this weekend gave us something. [The] Temple [game] showed we could come back and fight. Today was more of a grind out affair, and we found a way to close it out."
Fairleigh Dickinson hits the road for the first time this season on Thursday when the Knights travel to William & Mary for a 7 p.m. start time down in Williamsburg, Virginia.
