McCann and Frati Reach Milestones as Baseball Splits with Wagner Saturday

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 TEANECK, N.J. – The Fairleigh Dickinson baseball split its Saturday doubleheader with the visiting Wagner Seahawks.

Both teams used the long ball to secure wins on Saturday. Fairleigh Dickinson hit three in the first game; including a grand slam. Wagner hit a ninth-inning-two-run homer to win game two, which was their seventh homer of the doubleheader.

Game One
In game one, the Knights led by as many as eight runs but had to hold off a late surge by the Seahawks to close out the 10-8 victory.

Bobby Romano spearheaded the Knights' attack by knocking in six runs in the win. Romano finished 2-for-3 and clubbed his team-leading ninth home run of the season – a grand slam – which provided the Knights their healthy lead.

In the victory, senior right-hander Logan Frati registered his 200th career strikeout. Frati pitched three innings of relief, and with his fourth and final strikeout of the afternoon, became just the fourth Knight to reach the milestone.

Evan Layne (3-2) started for the Knights and picked up the victory by tossing five innings, allowing three runs and six hits, while striking out three.

Sophomore catcher Evan McDonald opened the scoring in the home first with an opposite field, two-run homer and the Knights held that 2-0 lead until the fourth inning.

A pair of solo blasts by Wagner's Freddie Sabido and Anthony Godino evened the score heading into the fifth inning. The home run was Sabido's first of two in the game as he was a thorn in the Knights' side finishing 4-for-5 with three runs and two RBI.

The Knights recaptured the lead in the home fourth when McDonald hit his second home run of the game – this one a solo blast. Then, in the bottom of the fifth, the Knights broke the game open thanks to Romano's grand slam, which sailed over the right field fence and provided the Knights a 7-2 cushion.

Leading 7-3 in the sixth, the Knights tacked on three more runs with a Brandon Seltzer RBI single and a two-run knock by Romano.

The Seahawks clawed back into the game with five runs in the ninth – four of which came on a grand slam by Phil Capra – but FDU senior Ryan Brennan came on and shut the door to earn his fourth save of the season.

Game Two
Wagner's bats started hot as the Seahawks scored all five of their runs via the long ball in game number two of the day.

Freddy Sabido hit the first homer of game two in the top of the first inning, a two-run shot to center field to give Wagner the 2-0 lead before an out was recorded.

Nick D'Amore connected on a solo shot in the top of the second inning to make it a 3-0 Seahawk lead.

Fairleigh Dickinson got one back in the bottom of the second. Three straight two-out hits from Jorge Iza, James Donlon and Mike Veit pushed a run – Iza – to get the Knights back to within two. Donlon's single did not get off the infield at short but some heads-up base running by Iza got the freshman ahead of the throw at home as Iza scored from second on the play.

Another run in the third inning made it a 3-2 game as Ryan Brennan scored on a RBI groundout from third. Brennan stole second and moved to third on a throwing error.

Matt McCann tied the game at three with a RBI single to right field in fourth. McCann's single, which was his 200th career hit, brought in Brandon Seltzer. McCann is the fifth Knight to reach the 200-hit plateau.

Danny Demetrops, who started the for the Knights, settled down after the first two innings. The senior worked out of a jam in the third to strand two Seahawks and followed that with a perfect fourth and fifth inning. Demetrops benefited from a double play to end sixth as the Knights turned a 6-3-2 twin-killing after a Wagner runner was caught between third and home.

The Knights would break the tie in the bottom of the seventh. Bobby Romano singled with one away and then stole second. Brennan would plate Romano on a single to right center to give Fairleigh Dickinson a 4-3 lead.

Brennan would come in relief of James Sharkey and get the final two outs of the eighth to strand two runners. Brennan would then get first two hitters in the ninth before Sean Mazzio singled to center. Sabido would then duplicate his at-bat from the second and hit a two-run homer to center to give Wagner the 5-4 lead and win.

Fairleigh Dickinson did get two men on in the bottom of the ninth with two out. Evan McDonald then came to the plate and just missed hitting a walk-off home run to center as Joe Sliverstrone made the catch to end the game on the warning track.

The Knights and Seahawks play the third and final game of the series at 1 p.m. on Sunday at the Naimoli Family Baseball Complex.
