NEW BRITAIN, Conn. – The Fairleigh Dickinson baseball team dropped its series finale at Central Connecticut State 17-3 on Sunday afternoon.
With the win, the Blue Devils (33-20, 21-7 NEC) complete their four-game sweep of the Knights (12-34, 8-18 NEC), who dropped their final 10 games of the season.
In the loss, senior first baseman
Ryan Brennan and junior right fielder
Jason Fatzinger each tallied a pair of hits as the Knights finished with nine on the afternoon.
Brennan's two-hit day moved him to fifth all-time in school history with 202, while senior shortstop
Matt McCann had one hit in the game and finishes his illustrious career fourth all-time with 212 knocks.
The Knights fell behind 2-0 in the first inning after Mitch Guilmette knocked in a pair with a double down the right field line. The Blue Devils tacked on another run in the second and held a 3-0 lead until the fifth inning.
In the fifth, the Knights chipped away with two runs on four hits. Fatzinger and
Danny Demetrops led off the frame with back-to-back singles. In his final collegiate game, Demetrops made his first start of the season as the designated hitter.
Three batters later,
Hunter Reeser plated both runners with a single to center field. McCann followed with a single but CCSU reliever Austin Salnitis came on and retired Brennan for the final out of the inning. Salnitis pitched 2.1 scoreless innings to earn his first win of the season.
In their next turn at bat, the Blue Devils added to their cushion by plating four runs on six hits. The inning started with five straight singles before a sacrifice fly resulted in the first out.
The Blue Devils' 7-2 lead held until the eighth when Fatzinger came through with a two-out RBI single through the left side of the infield, which resulted in the Knights' final run.
Fourteen men came to bat in the home eighth for CCSU as they broke the game open with 10 runs on seven hits, highlighted by junior Ryan Costello's three-run home run.
For the Knights, junior third baseman
Bobby Romano finished 1-for-4 and freshman center fielder
Mike Veit was 1-for-3 in the season finale..
CCSU's top three hitters Dean Lockery, Tyler Coleman and Costello combined for eight hits in their 11 official at bats on the day. The Blue Devils clinched the No. 2 seed in next weekend's Northeast Conference Tournament and will take on Wagner in the opening round.
