NEW BRITAIN, Conn. – Senior first baseman
Ryan Brennan became just the sixth Knight to reach the 200-career hit mark but the Fairleigh Dickinson baseball team dropped a doubleheader at Central Connecticut State, 9-4 and 10-5 on Saturday afternoon.
Brennan was 2-for-4 in game one before a 3-for-4 performance in game two provided him with the milestone mark.
In his third at bat in game two of the day, the senior first baseman clubbed a one-out double into the left-center field gap for hit number 200. Brennan joins teammate
Matt McCann, who accomplished the feat earlier this season, as just the sixth Knight to reach 200 knocks.
Brennan now ranks sixth all-time in program history, while McCann is fourth with 211 career hits. The duo will play their final game with the Knights in tomorrow's season finale.
Game One:
The Knights (12-33, 8-17 NEC) jumped out to an early lead with one run in the first inning.
Matt McCann and
Ryan Brennan opened the game with back-to-back singles and then McCann eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by
Owen VonEsslinger.
Making his final collegiate start,
Danny Demetrops started well for the Knights pitching two scoreless frames and striking out a pair.
With the Knights still on top 1-0, the Blue Devils (32-20, 20-7 NEC) broke loose with five runs in the third. Four straight singles set the tone before a pair of Knights' errors allowed the inning to further develop into a five-run surge for the home team.
The Blue Devils poured on two runs in the fourth and fifth innings and opened up a comfortable 9-1 cushion.
Four hits equated to two runs for the Knights in the sixth as
Hunter Reeser came through with the key blow – a two-run double, which made it a 9-3 game. The Knights netted their final run of the game in the seventh on an RBI single by
Bobby Romano.
Reeser finished the game 2-for-3, while McCann was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and nabbed his 24
th and 25
th stolen bases. Brennan and
Jason Fatzinger also finished with a pair of hits in the loss.
The Blue Devils received six innings from starter Brendan Smith, who scattered nine hits, allowed three runs (two earned) and struck out two to earn his fifth win of the season.
Game Two:
For the third game in a row, the Knights found themselves with an early lead after scoring two runs in the top of the first.
McCann and Brennan set the table with a single and double, respectively before
Bobby Romano was hit by a pitch, which loaded the bases with nobody out.
Jorge Iza followed with an RBI groundout and the Knights second run scored courtesy of a sacrifice fly by
James Donlon.
Leading 2-1 in the top of the third, Brennan singled and stole second before scoring on a groundout by Donlon.
CCSU tied the game in the bottom of the inning with a two-run double by Ryan Costello. Then in the fourth, the CCSU bats broke out with five runs on four hits. Franklin Jennings started the big inning with a one-out triple and immediately scored on a double by the next batter, Dylan Maher.
Brennan brought the Knights closer with his milestone hit – a one-out double to the gap in left-center field. Two batters later, Iza came through with a two-run double, which made it an 8-5 game.
But the Blue Devils quickly erased the Knights' efforts by scoring two runs of their own in the home half of the frame. Ron Jackson's two-run single off of FDU reliever
Dillon Forsythe provided the home team with the 10-5 cushion.
Michael Delease started for the Blue Devils and allowed all five runs across his 4.1 innings of work before giving way to Jared Gallagher, who pitched 2.2 innings of scoreless baseball.
FDU senior
Logan Frati made his final career start with the Knights and pitched 4.1 innings, allowed seven hits, eight earned runs, five walks and struck and three. The Knights received four outs from freshman right-hander
Bobby Ramsey, who allowed just one runner.
These two teams close out the regular season tomorrow at 1:00 p.m.
