Iza Delivers Walk-Off Hit as Knights Complete Doubleheader Sweep of The Mount

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

TEANECK, N.J. – The Fairleigh Dickinson baseball team earned a doubleheader sweep of Mount St. Mary's with a 4-1 victory in game one and a 6-5, walk-off win in game two on Saturday afternoon at Naimoli Family Baseball Complex.

The Knights (7-14, 5-1 NEC), who sit atop the Northeast Conference standings, have now won the first three games of the weekend series, which concludes tomorrow at 1 p.m.

Senior southpaw Danny Demetrops pitched six innings without allowing an earned run to earn the game one victory, while the Knights fought back from four runs down in game two before freshman second baseman Jorge Iza delivered the game-winning, bases-loaded knock to complete the sweep of the Mountaineers (4-20, 2-7 NEC).

Game One:
Runs were hard to come by in game one as the two teams fought through blustery conditions early on. Demetrops and Mount St. Mary's starter Zach Call each pitched four scoreless frames to begin the afternoon.

Demetrops worked with two men on in the top of the fifth to keep Mount off of the board and the game proceeded to the bottom of the inning still scoreless.

In the home fifth, junior right fielder Jason Fatzinger ignited the offense with a double to left field. After Matt McCann walked, Bobby Romano delivered a double of his own, which plated the game's first run.

Ryan Brennan followed with a sharp single to left field for the Knights' second run and then stole second base to put two men in scoring position. The next batter, Evan McDonald swiftly stroked a base hit through the right side before the Knights netted their fourth run on a sacrifice fly by Owen Vonesslinger, which resulted in a 4-0 lead.

The four runs were all Demetrops would need as the senior left-hander overcame an error in the sixth by stranding a pair of Mountaineers and limiting them to just one run. Demetrops capped the inning with a strikeout and induced an inning-ending fly out to centerfield.

For the second-straight game, Brennan came on to close things out for the Knights. After allowing the first two men to reach, the senior closer buckled down and retired the final three batters in order to earn his third save of the season.

Fatzinger and McDonald each tallied two hits in the win, while McCann nabbed his 11th stolen base of the campaign.

Demetrops (3-1) struck out five across his six innings of work and allowed one run (unearned), three walks and scattered seven hits en route to the victory.

Game Two:
The Mountaineers got the upper hand in game two as a pair of hits, including an RBI double by Vaughn Parker resulted in the game's first run. They added another with an unearned tally in the third and led 2-0 after three innings of play.

In the top of the fourth, three hits equated to two more runs for the Mount as Joshua Lenig knocked in the first with a single before an error aided the second score. FDU starter Evan Layne escaped the inning by picking off the first-base runner, which limited the damage and kept the deficit at 4-0.

After Mount St. Mary's starter Michael Collins struck out the side in the bottom of the fourth, the Knights notched their first run courtesy of a fifth-inning Fatzinger single.

Then, in the home sixth, the Knights mounted their furious comeback. Brennan started thing with a line drive single to right-center field. A pair of defensive miscues by the Mount allowed McDonald to reach and Brennan to move to third base with nobody out.

Vonesslinger scored Brennan with a sacrifice fly and then Hunter Reeser came through with a pinch-hit single. On the first pitch of his at bat, Iza laced an RBI base hit to left field to make it a 4-3 game.

With the bases loaded and two outs, the Knights' leadoff man McCann delivered a huge at bat by smacking a two-run single through the left side of the infield, which put the Knights in front 5-4.

In his second inning of work, freshman James Sharkey looked to close out the Mountaineers but the road team was able to scratch across the tying run without a hit thanks to three walks and a bases-loaded balk.

With the game knotted at 5-5 in the bottom of the inning, Brennan – representing the game-winning run -- kickstarted things with a walk and a stolen base. A textbook, opposite-field single by McDonald advanced Brennan to third base.

Three batters later, Iza delivered the heroics by driving an 0-2 pitch through the left side of the infield for his first walk-off hit as a Knight.

The freshman second baseman finished the day 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored and now sports the third highest batting average on the team at .328. With his 1-for-4 effort, McDonald extended his hit streak to six games and now leads the team with a .346 batting average.

With the win, Sharkey picked up his first collegiate victory and finished with a line of 2.1 innings, one earned run, three walks and a strikeout.

These two teams close out the season series tomorrow at Naimoli Family Baseball Complex. First pitch is slated for 1:00 p.m.
