SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Fairleigh Dickinson baseball team dropped its final game of the weekend at Bryant in walk-off fashion, 7-6 on Sunday afternoon at Conaty Park.
In the loss, senior shortstop
Matt McCann became the Knights' all-time leader in stolen bases. McCann swiped his 71
st and 72
nd bags on Sunday to set the new mark and break the previous record held by Matt Maher (2006-09). The record-setting theft came in the eighth inning after McCann had reached base with a walk.
The Knights (10-24, 7-8 NEC) broke a 5-5 tie in the top of the ninth when
Mike Veit lined a base hit off of the Bulldogs' pitcher, however, in the bottom of the inning, the Bulldogs (21-21, 14-4 NEC) stole the victory with a two-out, two-run home run by Jimmy Titus.
Sophomore catcher
Evan McDonald led a 15-hit Knights attack with a 3-for-5 performance, while McCann,
Ryan Brennan,
Jorge Iza and
Jason Fatzinger all tallied two hits apiece.
The Knights captured a 3-0 lead by scoring all three runs in their first turn at bat. Brennan and Iza each plated a run with a single and
Hunter Reeser drew a bases-loaded walk to give the Knights the early edge.
Nick Angelini's double helped the Bulldogs to net a pair of runs in the home first and chip the deficit down to 3-2.
Tied at three in the second inning, Angelini put the Bulldogs in front with a single to right field. Then, an RBI groundout by James Cliento in the fifth pushed the home team's advantage to 5-3.
Freshman center fielder
Brandon Seltzer pulled the Knights closer with an RBI bunt single in the sixth and then proceeded to steal second base. McCann followed with the game-tying knock – a single to center field – and the game was knotted 5-5 after six innings of play.
FDU starter
Corey Zeller retired the first two batters he faced in the home sixth before giving way to Jake Sciarotta, who forced an Angelini groundout to end the frame.
Zeller went 5.2 innings struck out four and walked two, while allowing five earned runs on six hits. In relief, Sciarotta provided the Knights 2.1 scoreless innings of work and held the Bulldogs to just one hit.
The game remained tied until the top of the ninth when the Knights tallied three hits and the go-ahead run. McDonald singled, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and then advanced to third on a single by Iza.
Veit stepped in and sent a 1-2 pitch back up the middle and off of Bryant reliever Logan Lessard's glove, which allowed McDonald to score easily from third and give the Knights a 6-5 edge.
In search of his fourth save of the season, Brennan came on to close things out for the Knights and quickly retired the first two Bulldogs he faced on foul outs.
First baseman Chris Wright reached on a single and then Titus came through with the heroics for the Bulldogs. Brennan threw an 0-1 pitch down in the zone and Titus went down and drove a line drive over the left field fence for the game winner.
The two-run blast completed the first-place Bulldogs' four-game series sweep of the Knights, who currently occupy the fourth and final NEC playoff spot.
Next up for FDU is a non-conference game this Tuesday, May 2 against Saint Peter's. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m. in Jersey City, N.J.
