Box Score 2 SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Fairleigh Dickinson baseball team dropped the second and third games of the four-game series against Bryant on Saturday at Conaty Park.
The Knights (10-23, 7-5 NEC) fell to the Bulldogs 11-3 in the first game before suffering the 11-0 shutout in the second game of the day.
Game One:
After losing in the series opener against Bryant on Friday, the Knights came out strong and got on the board first in game one.
Ryan Brennan sent a double through the right side and was driven in by an
Evan McDonald double to right field.
Bryant quickly responded in the bottom half of the inning with two runs coming in on a James Ciliento single to center. The hit brought in Mickey Gasper and Nick Angelini to take a 2-1 lead over the Knights.
Fairleigh Dickinson put its remaining two runs on the board in the top of the second inning.
Jorge Iza led off with a single to center followed by a
Jason Fatzinger single to left center. Iza scored on a
Mike Veit single down the third base line and Fatzinger crossed on a
Matt McCann single up the middle. The two runs gave the Knights a brief 3-2 lead.
The Bulldogs steadily put up more runs, adding one in the second, two in both the third and fourth and another four in the seventh.
The Knights scored three runs on eight hits, six of which came in the first or second inning. After the second inning, the Bulldogs' starting pitcher Steve Theetge limited the Knights to just two more hits whiles Jack Ipsen retired six straight batters.
Danny Demetrops took the loss for the Knights, allowing seven runs on 11 hits as well as three walks in six innings of work.
PJ Weeks and
Bobby Ramsey each pitched one inning of relief. Weeks allowed four runs on four hits while Ramsey gave up one hit.
Game Two:
Bryant continued its momentum into the second game of the day, scoring five runs in the first inning and four in the second en route to an 11-0 win.
McCann led off the first inning with a single up the middle but was picked off at first during
Bobby Romano's at-bat. Romano struck out before Brennan lined out to center to end the inning.
The Bulldogs first reached base in the bottom of the first on a throwing error before Angelini and Gasper walked to load the bases. A Chris Wright single to center brought in Cole Fabio and Angelini to give the Bulldogs the 2-0 lead.
Ciliento plated Gasper before Wright scored on a Tyler Panno single. Bryant extended its lead to 5-0 on a Jacob Marotta sacrifice bunt, which brought into Ciliento.
The Knights had a runner in scoring position in the second, but could not get him across. Owen Vonesslinger reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to second on a throwing error. He moved over to third on an Iza grounder but was left stranded.
The Bulldogs piled on four more runs in the second on three hits. Angelini drilled a triple to right center and was plated by a Gasper single.
Wright was hit by a pitch and Jimmy Titus walked to load the bases before a Panno triple brought in all three runners to take a 9-0 lead.
The Bulldogs extended their lead to 10-0 in the third on a Gasper single up the middle, which brought in Fabio.
Joe Paparelli added the exclamation point for Bryant with a homer to right center in the bottom of the sixth inning.
In the top of the seventh, the Knights had another chance to push a runner across, but came up short. Iza sent a single to right field and made it to third on a
Hunter Reeser single to right, but was left stranded on a pop fly.
Logan Frati took the loss, allowing 10 runs on seven hits with five walks in three innings of play.
Bobby Ramsey pitched one inning of relief, allowing no runs on one hit as well as a walk.
James Donlon closed out the game with one run on two hits and one walk in two innings of work.
The Knights and Bulldogs wrap up the series on Sunday afternoon with game four slated to start at 1:00 p.m.
