Baseball Drops Series Finale at St. John's 15-8

Box Score

QUEENS, N.Y. – The Fairleigh Dickinson baseball team dropped its series finale to No. 22 St. John's 15-8 on Sunday afternoon at Jack Kaiser Stadium.

In the loss, junior third baseman Bobby Romano hit his team-leading sixth home run of the season. Romano led a 13-hit effort by the Knights with a 2-for-5 day including two runs and two RBI.

Junior right fielder Jason Fatzinger finished 2-for-3 with three runs scored, while Matt McCann, Evan McDonald, and Mike Veit all had two knocks.

After failing to score in yesterday's loss, the Knights (10-20) wasted no time breaking into the scoring column on Sunday as they leapt out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning.

A single and stolen base by Bobby Romano set the stage for Evan McDonald to plate the game's first run with a base hit through the left side of the infield.

The Knights' lead proved to be short-lived however, as the Red Storm (30-5) immediately counter-punched with four runs in the home half of the first off of starter Corey Zeller.

Right fielder Anthony Brocato delivered the big hit of the inning with a two-run home run over the left field fence.

The Knights got a run back in the second on a Hunter Reeser sacrifice fly, which knocked in Jason Fatzinger, who had doubled earlier in the inning.

The Red Storm (29-5) added to their lead with a pair of runs in the third on a single by second baseman Josh Shaw.

In the top of the fourth, the Knights threatened to chip away when Mike Veit singled and Reeser reached on an error. With the two Knights aboard, St. John's went to the bullpen and Joe LaSorsa immediately induced an inning-ending double play to eliminate the threat and preserve the 6-2 lead.

Trailing 8-2 in the fifth, Romano stepped in and unloaded on a 2-1 pitch and drove it over the left field fence for a solo homer.

The Knights would fight back in the sixth and pulled to within four, 11-7 thanks to four runs on four hits.

Joge Iza started things with a double, Fatzinger singled and then with one out, Matt McCann came through with an RBI double. Senior first baseman Ryan Brennan capped the four-run inning with a run-scoring single to left.

But once again, the Red Storm quickly had an answer as they scored three runs in the sixth, highlighted by a Michael Donadio's solo home run, which pushed the lead up to 14-7 and helped finalize the win.

The Knights return to NEC action for their next game when they begin a four-game series at first-place Bryant beginning on Friday, April 28 at 3:00 p.m. in Smithfield, R.I.
