CINCINNATI, Ohio -- The Fairleigh Dickinson baseball team dropped its third game in as many days, falling 15-3 to Xavier at Hayden Field on Sunday afternoon.
The victory gave the Musketeers (16-12) the three-game sweep over the Knights (4-14), who dropped their fourth straight overall.
In the loss, senior shortstop
Matt McCann led the Knights with a 2-for-5 day, including an RBI-double and a run scored, while junior third baseman
Bobby Romano knocked in the team's other two runs with his third home run of the season.
On the mound, FDU starter
Corey Zeller (0-3) went five innings, allowed seven runs on six hits and five walks and struck out two, while Xavier's Greg Jacknewitz (1-2) picked up the win by tossing five innings of two-run baseball.
In their first turn at bat, the Musketeers jumped on the Knights with three runs, highlighted by Nate Soria's two-run single. Soria was one of four Musketeers to finish with three hits on the afternoon.
Still trailing 3-0 in the top of the third, Romano brought the Knights back with an opposite-field, two-run blast, which made it a 3-2 ballgame. Romano finished the game 1-for-3 and drew a pair of walks.
However, the Musketeers put together a huge sixth inning and broke the game wide open. In the game-changing frame -- without the aid of an extra-base hit -- they amassed six runs on seven knocks and extended their cushion to 11-2. Soria singled twice in the inning and Joe Gellenbeck, who finished 3-for-6 with four RBI, plated a pair with a single of his own.
The Musketeers tacked on two more in the seventh and eighth innings to solidify their lead and come away with the win.
FDU left fielder
Owen Vonesslinger finished 1-for-4 on the afternoon and now has a hit in 10 of his last 11 games, while
Evan McDonald and
Brandon Seltzer were responsible for the team's other two hits.
The Knights return to NEC action for their next series when they host Mount St. Mary's for a four-game series over April 7, April 8 and April 9.
