ST.LOUIS, Mo. – The Fairleigh Dickinson baseball team was unable to hold onto a 2-0 lead as Saint Louis rallied to earn a 5-2 victory over the Knights at Billiken Sports Center on Friday evening.
The Knights (0-7) led 2-0 headed to the bottom of the fourth but the Billikens (8-1) fought back to earn the win.
Sophomore southpaw
Evan Layne started for the Knights and went five innings, allowing just one earned run and three hits, while striking out five.
James Donlon and
Matt McCann each tallied a pair of hits for the Knights in the loss, while Carter Hanford paced the Billikens with 2-for-3 afternoon including two runs, two RBI and a home run.
The Knights jumped out to a 1-0 lead in their first turn at bat. After the first two batters were retired,
Bobby Romano kick started the two-out rally with a single.
Ryan Brennan and
Evan McDonald each followed with singles of their own as Romano scored on McDonald's knock for the game's first run.
After three scoreless frames, the Knights struck again in the top of the fourth Donlon plated
Jorge Iza with a double down the right field line to make it a 2-0 game. Iza had reached on a single and then moved into scoring position by stealing second base.
The Billikens netted their first run of the afternoon when Hanford launched a solo blast to left, which made it a 2-1 game after four.
Layne wrapped up his day with a 1-2-3 fifth inning as the Knights carried their one-run lead into the sixth.
Donlon pitched the sixth for the Knights and surrendered a run on a bases-loaded sacrifice fly before Jake Sciarotta ended the frame with a strikeout.
The Billikens broke loose in the eighth with three runs on three hits. Hanford and James Morisano sparked the rally for the home team who held off the Knights in the ninth to earn the win.
These two teams square off again tomorrow at 3:00 p.m. (EST). Jackson Wark is set to go for the Billikens, while
Logan Frati will make his second start of the season for the Knights.
