Baseball Unable to Fend Off Siena

Box Score
TEANECK, N.J. -- Despite leading for most of the game, the Fairleigh Dickinson baseball team was unable to hold off a late rally by Siena on Wednesday afternoon, falling 9-7 at Naimoli Baseball Complex.

The Knights (4-11) led by as many as five runs in the game but the Saints (7-12-1) chipped away before netting a pair of runs in the eighth and ninth innings to come away with the non-conference victory.

Freshman James Sharkey gave the Knights a solid 4.1 innings of work but earned a no decision. Sharkey scattered six hits and three runs, while striking out six before giving way to the bullpen.

Ryan Brennan, Matt McCann and Owen Vonesslinger all tallied two-hit games as the Knights totaled 11 hits on the afternoon. Brennan was especially sharp as the senior first baseman knocked in three runs on the day.

Jonathan Crimmin delivered the big blow for the Saints with a pinch-hit, two-run homer in the eighth, which knotted the game at 7-7. The Saints went in front with two more in the ninth thanks to an RBI triple by Dan Swain and a run-scoring single by Jordan Bishop.

The teams each used six pitchers in the game and Siena's Danny Hobbs was the 12th and final man to take the mound as he closed things out with a perfect 1-2-3 final inning to earn his second save of the season.

Trailing 1-0 in the home second, the Knights offense broke out for four runs. A double steal netted the first run, then, leadoff man Matt McCann smacked a long single off of the right field fence to plate the second run. Two batters later, Brennan laced a two-run single to center, which put the Knights in front 4-1.

After the Saints scratched across a run in the third, the Knights' bats went back to work with two more runs in the fourth, highlighted by a two-out RBI double from Brennan, which bounced off of the center field fence.

The Saints resiliently chipped away against the Knights' bullpen and trailed 7-5 entering the eighth inning. The first two men went down in order before a walk brought the tying run to the plate in the form of the pinch-hitter Crimmin. Crimmin drove a 1-1 pitch way over the left field fence, which tied the game at seven.

Still tied in the ninth, with a runner on second, Swain shot a ball into the left-center field gap and raced all the way to third for an RBI triple, which put the Saints in front for good. He later scored on a single by Bishop before Hobbs closed out the win on the mound.

With his three-RBI day, Brennan increased his team-leading total to 16 on the campaign. In addition to the aforementioned performances, FDU right fielder Jason Fatzinger reached base in all four of his at bats, drawing three walks to go along with a single.

Next up for the Knights is three-game series in Cincinnati, Ohio against Xavier beginning this Friday, March 31 at 3:00 p.m.
