BROOKLYN, N.Y. -- The Fairleigh Dickinson baseball team opened Northeast Conference action by sweeping a doubleheader over Wagner on Friday night at MCU Park. The Knights won the opener 7-5 in 12 innings before claiming the nightcap 4-2.
Evan Layne earned the victory in game one for the Knights (4-9) by closing out the Seahawks (2-12) in game one, while senior southpaw
Danny Demetrops was the hero in game two as he went the distance, notching a complete-game, two-run effort to propel FDU to victory. The complete game was Demetrops' first of his collegiate career and gave the Knights their fourth win in a row.
Senior first baseman
Ryan Brennan homered in both games and has now left the yard in three straight contests. Brennan totaled four hits on the day and reached base five times in game one in a 3-for-5 effort.
Game One
Friday's opener needed more than the scheduled nine innings to declare a winner as the team's combined to throw 10 pitchers across the 12 innings.
Brennan fired the first blow of the game in the top of the second as he gave the Knights a 1-0 lead with a solo blast over the left-center field fence. The Seahawks immediately answered with a run of their own in the home half of the frame to tie the game. FDU starter
Logan Frati was able to limit the damage with some help from sophomore catcher
Evan McDonald, who nabbed a potential base stealer for the third out of the inning.
A pair of run-scoring singles by the Seahawks in the third allowed them to nab a 3-1 lead but FDU stormed back. In the fourth, McDonald plated a pair with a single to right-center field.
The teams traded runs in the fifth and eighth as the game remained deadlocked after nine.
Following a pair of relatively quiet innings, the Knights scrapped together a run in the top of the 11th. Leadoff man
Matt McCann reached base via an error and proceeded to steal second. The next batter,
Brandon Seltzer, knocked a single up the middle, which scored McCann and put the Knights in front 5-4.
But the Seahawks refused to go quietly as they manufactured a run with a sacrifice bunt and a pair of walks -- including a bases loaded free pass by Sean Mazzio, which knotted the game at five.
The Knights remained undaunted as
Jorge Iza sparked a 12th-inning surge. Iza singled and stole second to immediately put the Knights in position to regain the lead. Iza advanced to third on a bunt single by McDonald and then scored when
Owen Vonesslinger delivered the go-ahead knock via an infield single to shortstop.
A base hit by McCann gave the Knights an insurance run and Layne held the Seahawks off the board in the bottom of the inning to secure the win.
Game Two
After head coach
Gary Puccio had to use five pitchers in game one, senior left-hander
Danny Demetrops took the ball in game two looking to give his team a long outing. Demetrops did just that, as he went the distance for his first collegiate complete game.
The senior struck out seven and allowed just one walk as he limited the Seahawks to two runs.
In their first turn at bat, Wagner broke through with a run thanks to an RBI-double by Anthony Godino. But Demetrops settled in from that point on as he tossed six straight scoreless frames before allowing one more run in the seventh.
With Demetrops keeping the Wagner lineup in check, the FDU offense netted two runs in the top of the second.
Mike Veit tied the game with a bases-loaded, RBI groundout and then Iza scored on a wild pitch as FDU went in front 2-1.
After Wagner tied the game at two in the home seventh, Brennan delivered what proved to be the game-winning blow with his second blast of the day -- this one a solo shot over the left field fence, which put FDU on top for good. Third baseman
Bobby Romano plated the Knights' fourth run of the night on a fielder's choice.
McCann continued his ascent up the FDU stolen base record list by nabbing another steal in game two and now has tallied at least one stolen base in five straight games. The senior shortstop has 10 steals on the campaign to go along with his team-best .360 batting average.
