HACKENSACK, N.J. –
Madelynn Comly capped a career-high 22-point night by hitting the game-winning layup with one second left that lifted Fairleigh Dickinson past first-place Sacred Heart 58-56 on Monday night.
Comly combined with
Rainey Cox, who scored a career-high 14 points, to score 36 of the Knights' 58 points on the night. Fairleigh Dickinson (6-17, 4-8 NEC) closed the game by scoring 10 of the final 13 points to get the win.
Comly's layup came on off an assist from
Zeynep Akgun on an out of bounds play with 1.7 seconds left. The Knights got the ball underneath after the rebound off an
Amina Markovic layup went out of bounds off Sacred Heart (12-11, 9-3 NEC).
Fairleigh Dickinson's defense set up the winning shot from Comly by getting a stop on the Pioneers with a defensive rebound from Comly after Katherine Haines missed a layup with 13 seconds left. The Pioneers let the shot clock go all the way down before getting the shot off to give the Knights as little time as possible to tie if Haines had connected.
Head coach
Peter Cinella said postgame, "[I am] very proud of the team for showing grit by coming back from down 11 against the first-place team. We didn't panic and kept swinging the ball from side to side [on offense]. Rainey stepped up big tonight and finished through contact [multiple times].
He continued, "We got a huge defensive stop with under 40 seconds to go and
Zeynep Akgun made a great decision on the final play. It is important that we learned how to have a foul shooting advantage and to outrebound [teams]."
The final run from the Knights started with a Cox layup – while getting fouled – with 5:57 left. Comly was fouled going for the offensive rebound off Cox's second free throw and Comly hit both free throws to make it a one-point game, 53-52.
On the next possession for Fairleigh Dickinson, Markovic came up to the top of the key and knocked down only her fourth 3-pointer this season after an assist from
Natalie Zamora to give the Knights their first lead since the first quarter, 55-53, with just under five minutes left.
Two minutes later, Markovic capped an 8-0 run inside the closing 10-3 spurt with a free throw to five Fairleigh Dickinson a three-point lead – 56-53 – with 2:55 to play.
Katherine Haines converted an old-fashioned-three-point play to bring Sacred Heart back level at 56 with 2:24 left.
Both teams had chances to take the lead in the final two-plus minutes but neither team was able to connect until Comly.
Cox's 14 points came on 5-of-9 shooting. The junior also added five rebounds, four steals and three assists in her first start this season and first since the season-opener of last season versus Manhattan. Comly came off the bench and connected on 7-of-17 from the field, including 3-of-7 from three, and tallied a new career high of 22 points. Two 3-pointers came in the fourth quarter as the Knights were trying to come back from an 11-point deficit.
Markovic finished with six points, five rebounds and two blocks in 21 minutes off the bench. Thirty-one of the Knights' points came from reserves.
Haines led the Pioneers with 22 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Adaysha Williams was also in double figures with 13 for Sacred Heart.
Fairleigh Dickinson will try to make it two straight wins on Saturday when the Knights travel over to Brooklyn, New York to face the Blackbirds of LIU Brooklyn. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
