BROOKLYN, N.Y. – Twenty-six points off 18 turnovers and 31 points from the bench keyed Fairleigh Dickinson's 67-54 win at LIU Brooklyn on Saturday afternoon.
The win also gives Fairleigh Dickinson (7-17, 5-8 NEC) a season sweep of LIU Brooklyn (4-20, 3-10 NEC) and back-to-back NEC wins for the first time since February of last season when they beat Saint Francis U and Wagner.
The defensive effort was spearheaded by three quarters. The Knights scored off all four steals by Brown. The senior guard finished with 15 points (6-of-10), four rebounds, four assists and the four steals.
LIU Brooklyn led by as many as eight in the first quarter, 12-4, with 2:31 left. The Knights then out scored the Blackbirds 25-19 over the remaining 12 minutes of the first half.
The third quarter defensive effort by the Knights carried over from the second. The Knights surrendered only six points to the Blackbirds in the third. That followed a spurt of just four points in three minutes from the Blackbirds to close the second.
Offensively, Fairleigh Dickinson used a 10-0 run over 1:10 late in the second quarter to turn a two-point deficit and take an eight-point lead, 29-21, with 61 seconds left in the half. The run started with a Brown triple and then Brown stole the ball at half court and raced the other way for two on the ensuing LIU Brooklyn possession.
Comly hit a trey from the left wing before a pair of free throws from
Amina Markovic, who finished with 11 points, capped the spurt for the Knights.
Brown had nine points off the bench in the first half. Brown and
Lauren Francillon combined for 15 off the bench over the first 20 minutes for the Knights. Fairleigh Dickinson also went 9-of-10 from the charity stripe in the opening two quarters and finished 20-of-22.
Separate 6-0 and 5-0 scoring runs boosted the Knights in the third quarter and lengthened the six-point halftime lead to 16 after Comly hit two free throws inside the final minute. Comly finished with 16 points (6-of-9), three rebounds along with the four thefts.
The advantage for Fairleigh Dickinson would grow to 19, 57-38, with 4:45 left in the game. LIU Brooklyn would not go quietly however. The Blackbirds closed to within nine, 61-52 with the aid of a 7-0 run, with 39 ticks left on the clock.
Fairleigh Dickinson would then make seven free throws from
Courtney Blankenship and
Natalie Zamora to put the game out of reach. Blankenship finished with five points – all on free throws – and Zamora added four – also all from free throws.
Francillon and
Brianna Thomas added to Brown's production off the bench with eight points each. Francillon also grabbed five rebounds.
LIU Brooklyn was led by Shanovia Dove with 16 points. Seneca Richards and DeAngelique Waithe had nine.
Fairleigh Dickinson will try to make it three straight wins when the Knights host Central Connecticut State on Monday night at the Rothman Center. Tip is scheduled for 7 p.m. between the Knights and Blue Devils.
