DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Fairleigh Dickinson baseball team dropped its first of three games in Davidson, North Carolina on Friday, falling to Lehigh University 16-8 at Wilson Field.
Making their 2017 debut, the Mountain Hawks (1-0) jumped on the Knights (0-4) with a pair of runs in the first inning and broke the game open with six more in the fourth.
The loss snaps the Knights six-game winning streak over the Mountain Hawks, which included four wins last season.
Lehigh amassed 14 hits in the win, while the Knights finished with eight.
Evan McDonald paced the Knights with a 3-for-5 day including three RBI, two runs scored and his second home run of the campaign, while
Brandon Seltzer chipped in with two hits and an RBI.
Freshman
James Donlon made his collegiate debut on the mound for the Knights and lasted three innings, allowing four earned runs and five hits, while striking out one.
PJ Weeks came on in relief and permitted three earned runs in his 1.2 innings of work.
The Knights used six pitchers in the game, including
Dillon Forsythe, who provided 2.1 scoreless innings.
Lehigh's Patrick Donnelly and John Scarr each plated four runs in the win, while Donnelly tallied a 3-for-6 afternoon, including three runs. The tandem also each hit a home run in the victory.
In the top of the first, FDU leadoff man
Matt McCann reached on a single and advanced into scoring position but was stranded at second base.
The Mountain Hawks struck in the home half of the frame highlighted by RBI-doubles from Scarr and Donnelly.
The Knights scratched across a run in the top of the second after McDonald scored on a base hit from Seltzer.
But in the home fourth, with a one-run lead in hand, Lehigh earned some breathing room by scoring six runs. James Bleming scored two runs with a triple before Scarr launched a three-run down the right field line, which made it an 8-1 game.
The Knights scored a pair of runs in the seventh and eighth innings to gain ground but the Mountain Hawks pulled away with six more tallies in the ninth to rebuild their lead.
Again, FDU surged as they fought back with three runs in the ninth, including a two-run homer by McDonald, but in the end it was not enough as sophomore Anthony Morrone closed the door for Lehigh.
Mark Washington earned the win for Lehigh, pitching four innings allowing one earned run and four hits.
The Knights will look to get their first win of the season on Saturday, when they return to action against UMass Lowell at 1 p.m.
