Women's Soccer Battles Saint Francis U to 1-1 Draw

LORETTO, Pa. – One hundred ten minutes was not enough to determine a winner between the Fairleigh Dickinson women's soccer team and the Saint Francis U Red Flash on Sunday afternoon. The two teams battled to a 1-1 tie and are tied for second place in the Northeast Conference.

Fairleigh Dickinson (6-8-3, 4-1-1 NEC) scored in the first half but needed an Amanda Fitzgerald stop on a penalty kick by Saint Francis U's Gabby Morales in the first overtime period to get the 1-1 draw on the road.

'It was a good bounce-back performance from us after Robert Morris," said assistant coach Jason Weisberg. "Obviously, Amanda's save on the PK was huge and leaving with a point showed the resolve of our team after playing two overtimes on Friday and then two more today."

Fitzgerald made the stop diving to her right in the 93rd minute. The sophomore stopped Morales from the spot for the second time in as many meetings between the two sides. Fitzgerald denied Morales in the semifinals of last season's NEC Tournament.

Sofia Albertsson scored her eighth of the season in the 14th minute when she controlled a bouncing ball in the Red Flash penalty area and put it past goalkeeper Julia Hernan. Viktorija Miseljic provided the assist after her shot attempt spun off and into the path of classmate Albertsson.

The two freshmen are one-two on the team in points; Albertsson has 18, and Miseljic has 16.

However, Saint Francis U (7-7-2, 4-1-1 NEC) would tie the game before the halftime intermission. Alyssa McGhee tied the game at one when she got on the end of a pass from Allison LaDuke at the top of the box and McGhee controlled it and flicked it past Fitzgerald.

After halftime, the Knights had a pair of opportunities in the opening 10 minutes. Julia Shea got free coming down the left side and crossed, but the ball kept sailing over everyone in the box and out. In the 52nd minute, Albertsson also got free down the left side and shot one on goal, but Hernan was there at the near post to catch it cleanly.

The Fairleigh Dickinson defense was able to limit the Red Flash chances in the second half. Saint Francis had forced one save from Fitzgerald in the 64th minute but went without a shot for more than 20 minutes. Siobhan Bross ended the spell but put her shot over the bar.

Once overtime started, the Red Flash controlled the run of play before and after the missed penalty kick from Morales. Fairleigh Dickinson was outshot 5-1 in the extra 20 minutes of action.

Fitzgerald finished the day with six saves on 17 shots faced. The Knights had 12 shots on the day and forced Hernan to make six saves as well.

Up next for the Knights is a trip to Sacred Heart on Friday afternoon.
